1 Simple Way That You Can Help Me Research Stormwater Objectives
Last week I wrote my first article on LinkedIn. It turns out that lots of people use LinkedIn and read that article.
This week I intend to put that to good use.
I would like your help.
Don't worry, it's easy help. You won't be helping me move any furniture.
You see, for a while now I have been fascinated by how the stormwater pollution objectives that we enact through policy and legislation drive on ground outcomes. More specifically I have been fascinated by how different formats for objectives drive different on-ground outcomes
What do I mean by that?
There are different ways to express objectives. In Queensland, we currently have pollutant load reduction targets. They ask developers to figure out how much pollution that they are generating, and reduce that by a given percentage. On the other hand you can have fixed targets which say 'you shall not discharge more than X amount of pollution from this particular amount of land'. Both drive a reduction in pollution, but the approaches that they incentivise are very different.
I want to catalogue all the different types of stormwater objectives that currently exist in the world, and assess how they function. You can probably read between the lines here and figure out that while I am very grateful for our current objectives, I have a sneaky suspicion that we could be doing better.
Here's the bit where you get to help.
If you know of a jurisdiction anywhere in the world that has legislation that requires stormwater pollution to be controlled, I would love it if you could let me know. Now, I know that I said 'anywhere in the world', but I have a pretty good grip on the eastern seaboard of Australia, so let's casts our gaze further afield.
Leave a comment below and let me know what jurisdiction you know of that has stormwater objectives. If you would like bonus points then tell me:
- where the jurisdiction is
- a link to find the objectives
- why you suggested this jurisdiction
So if I was to suggest a jurisdiction it might go something like:
- Where - Gold Coast City Council, Australia
- Link - http://cityplan.goldcoast.qld.gov.au/Pages/plan/viewer.aspx?vid=10133. Navigate to Schedule 6. Navigate to SC6.9.3
- Rationale - Gold Coast City Council implements percentage load reduction targets similar to those in Queensland's State Planning Policy. Gold Coast has lower thresholds which means that more development types trigger the policy.
There's no prize for helping, but you do get the nice warm fuzzy feeling of assisting someone who is trying to improve stormwater policy in Australia.
If you're able to help out; great! If not, no dramas.
Cheers

9yGreat to hear someone getting their teeth into this subject. I'll reply with some info on the UK when I'm back in the office unless someone else beats me to it. Good luck.
