1095 Days of war: Ukraine's unending fight

For three years, Ukraine has endured the horrors of war. Three years of loss and destruction, but also of incredible resilience and solidarity.

Since the full-scale invasion on February 24, 2022, at least 16 children have been killed or injured each week in average in Ukraine (source : UNICEF).

Nearly 10.6 million Ukrainian - almost a quarter of the pre-war population - have been displaced, reports the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), mainly in neighbouring countries.

Our teams in Ukraine, Moldova, Terre des hommes Foundation - Romania , and Terre des hommes - Hungary have been working tirelessly to support children and families—providing emergency aid, mental health support, and helping them rebuild their lives in new communities.

From Ukraine to New Horizons: A Mother-Daughter Journey of Resilience

“I still remember that day, I believe I will never forget the first morning when the war started. To wake up and see a rocket flying above your head.” Says Aliona, a 40-year-old Ukrainian mother. In 2022, she fled to Romania with her 12-year-old daughter Carolina. Since then, they have been living in a two-bedroom apartment in Bucharest.

For the past two years, Carolina has been attending online Ukrainian school, but for her emotional well-being, Aliona decided to enroll her in a Romanian school. “I have to take care of her and offer her a future. (…) As a mother, I understand that my daughter needs this: to wake up, go to school, interact with other children and make friends, because she misses that. She’s forgotten what it feels like.”

As Aliona is still battling with Romanian authorities to get approval for her daughter to go to school, she joined Terre des hommes’ Resilience and Innovation Center. There, Carolina participates in various activities with other children who, just like her, had to leave everything they’ve known behind.

Facing freezing temperatures during wartime

In Ukraine, the bitter winter offers no respite: families already devastated by war struggle to survive between the freezing cold, destruction, and constant bombardments. To respond to this emergency, in collaboration with our partners, our teams have expanded their efforts by providing crucial financial support to families who had no access to electricity or heated housing. Thanks to this aid, nearly 340 families were able to cover their heating costs and purchase essential supplies. "It was truly necessary help for my children and me," says Kateryna, a resident of the Mykolaiv oblast.

This assistance complements our established protection and psychological support activities. Despite the arrival of milder temperatures, the ongoing war continues to affect hundreds of thousands of families. Your support remains more important than ever.
