The A-Z of Networking KnowHow – a light-hearted approach

An A-Z of networking Do’s and Don’ts; We plan to share some points that will resonate with you, some for the right reason and some for the wrong! So take heed and make sure you know how to make networking work for you!

A

Advocate – You’re truly in a privileged position, representing your business. Do it with confidence, panache, be adequately humble and honestly passionate.

Attitude – Always, always turn up with a positive attitude – if you plan to have a great experience you will. And you’ll deserve to reap some reward to boot!

Arse – Don’t behave like an arrogant know-it-all and please make sure the builders bum stays on the work site.

Alcohol – Yes, you can have a drink, but a networking event where you’re representing your business is not the place to be dancing on the tables – save that for Friday night! Falling at the first hurdle (or bottle) is a sure way to damage your credibility.

B

Babysit – If you see someone on their own, looking a bit lost, do go and introduce yourself. They maybe new, nervous and are probably a bit scared. A little babysitting will go a long way in putting them at ease and giving them a memorable experience (for the right reasons).

Beaming –Always have a smile on your face. Not only will you look more approachable and friendly but if you’re known as that happy jolly person people will gravitate towards you. You’ll be magnetic.

Boring – Try not to be! Go out of your way and always ask after the other person first; social and business questions – have a little repertoire. And don’t look bored when listening to someone, pay attention and maintain eye contact.

Belittle – Those who belittle others are bully’s. It doesn’t win friends and influence people – it just makes you look stupid! And if you’re like that at work...

C

Calculated – It’s very acceptable and downright sensible to plan an outcome or action that you hope to achieve from your networking. Make sure it works for you and your business.

Calibre – If you surround yourself with business professionals with like-minded goals and aspirations they’ll lift you and carry you with them – the energy will be contagious.

Charismatic – This means paying careful attention to how you interact with other people; by being charming, respectful and friendly and you’ll find you have people on your side.

Chatterbox – Little Miss Chatterbox ended up having no friends – there’s a moral in that! Breathe and let someone else take the floor. Share and share alike!
