A28- Reference Books for Transformer Engineers- Part 1

Since 1889, there are more than hundred books on transformer engineering, published in English language. Apart from this, there are a number of books related to transformers, on topics like Transformer Bushings, OLTC, Transformer Oil, History, Electromagnetic aspects etc, etc. Transformer engineers have to refer to these volumes quite often during their day-to-day work. In this article, we will review such reference books related to Transformers. These will be of interest to transformer manufacturers and users. Books on transformer accessories (bushings and tap-changers) are in the list. Ellis’ volume (2011) is quite popular for Bushings and for OLTC, the classic book by MR Germany (2000 &2014) is the last word on the subject. Bushing designers will find the 1952 book by Silbermann as the basic text for condenser bushing design.

Transformer Manual published by the Central Board of Irrigation and Power (a Government of India body) since 1976, is the bible used in India by Transformer users and makers. This popular manual, updated frequently is prepared by representatives of utilities, consulting companies and transformer manufacturers, under the auspices of CBIP. This manual gives the standard specifications for various types of transformers (general requirements, standard ratings, voltage ratios, impedance, losses, cooling and list of fittings and accessories) under each category. Purpose is to standardise ratings and to reduce variety, benefitting both users and manufacturers. Manual also covers test requirements, application, selection, installation, operation and maintenance guides

CIGRE (The International Council on Large Electric Systems, Paris) has published a large number of technical reports (brochures) related to electric power engineering. Transformer engineers are generally interested in the Technical Brochures issued by the Study Committee “Transformers” (SC 12 until 2002 and thereafter SC A2) and the Study Committee “Materials and Emerging Test Techniques” (SC D1). The independent study committee for transformers was constituted in 1949. CIGRÉ SC A2 covers design, construction, manufacture, and operation of all types of power transformers, including industrial power transformers, DC converters, phase-shifting transformers, reactors, and transformer accessories such as bushings and tap changers. A selection of CIGRÉ Technical Brochures that are of interest to transformer engineers is listed below. Each of these brochures provides distilled technical knowledge on the subject, collated by global experts as a good tutorial for in-depth study. CIGRÉ members can get these publications, free of cost, from the CIGRÉ website- www.e-cigre.org. Non-members can download brochures three years after the publication date.

P. Ramchandran Sir is a Bhishma Pitamah of Transformers having not only immense collection of literatures on transformers but practical knowledge also. Hats off to you, Sir! New generation may not be aware of the journey and evolution of transformers. Your books based on practical experience can be a good guide for the budding transformer engineers as well as operation and maintenance engineers.
