A30- Reference Books for Transformer Engineers- Part 3
History
F. Uppenborn wrote a book (1888) with the title "History of the Transformer" just three years after the transformer was patented, describing how the transformer was developed during the previous 30 years by engineers from different countries. Other titles listed are mainly history of transformer factories eg. Ganz, Hungary; GE, Pittsfield; J&P, UK; Wilson Transformers, Melbourne; Ferranti Packard, Canada etc. During 1960s & 1970s, the leading transformer development centres in the world were Pittsfield, Massachusetts (GE) and Ludvika, Sweden (ASEA). Thomas J Blalock’s book give interesting story of the developments in Pittsfield factory through decades and the sad demise of that great factory.
The book by Jim Fyvie (2007) is of a slightly different kind. It is somewhat an auto-biographical narrative by a transformer technical manager of yester years. Jim is from Edinburgh, Scotland, started his career in 1954 as apprentice at Bruce Peebles, later the company name changed to Parson Peebles, Peebles Electric, Rolls Royce Peebles Transformers to VA Tech Peebles Transformers. Jim Fyie finally retired from VA Tech in 2002.

Maxwell’s Equations
Nearly 160 years back, James Maxwell (1831-1879), mathematical physicist from Scotland, developed the famous equations connecting electricity and magnetism. Some scientists consider these equations as the most ingenious discovery by mankind that laid the foundations of classical electrodynamics. Even though transformer engineers earn their live-li-hood through the effects of Maxwell’s works, many will find it difficult to explain the equations correctly, much less to handle the symbols of higher mathematics used in it. Daniel Fleisch’s slim volume (2008) will help one to understand the equations easily and also to grasp the mathematical symbols involved. Purcell (1965) is the best introductory level text to understand the subject and Schey (1997) will help in understanding the higher mathematics involved in Maxwell’s equations.
Remember you can also cull out a 500-page book on Maxwell’s Equations from Wikipedia!

Transformers Expert
4y1 . For young transformer engineers. My 75+ buddies and I are delighted with Mr. P Ramachandran, who has collected a unique collection of "living" books on transformers for more than half a century. Feel free to ask him the questions you are interested in. 2. The editorial of TRANSFORMERS store has accepted for publication our joint bibliography with Ramachandran of Russian books on power transformers. The bibliography covers the period from the date of publication of the first original book in Russian (by F.I. Kholuyanov, 1913) to the beginning of 2020. It includes 140 books and will probably appear in several issues of the magazine. Almost all books are freely available in electronic form. Links will be provided in the article. 3. In the last 20 years, a number of Russian books have been published on the HV and UHV shunt reactors, which have no analogues in other languages or are unknown to me. Since this part of the bibliography can be published no earlier than 1-2 years, then in the next message I will indicate these books and can share them.

4yFantastic work and one small digression on Maxwell's equation. They can not be found in the way that we use them today in Maxwells original work https://www.aproged.pt/biblioteca/MaxwellI.pdf JC Maxwell was a brilliant mind and his original work was postulated on 20 quaternions http://www.thp.uni-koeln.de/gravitation/mitarbeiter/hehl/MaxwellUCL2.pdf

4yAnother great contribution.
