Access to the National Lung Cancer Screening Program at I-MED

The National Lung Cancer Screening Program (NLCSP) will commence on 1 July 2025. The Australian government screening program uses low dose computed tomography (CT) scans to look for lung cancer in high-risk people without any symptoms. The program aims to pick up cases of lung cancer at an earlier stage providing a pathway to more effective treatment options.

Treatment pathways and better health outcomes

Lung cancer is the fifth most common cancer diagnosed in Australia* but all too often is picked up at a late stage when the outcomes can be poor compared to other types of cancer. There is strong evidence that the treatment options are more effective when lung cancer is found earlier using low dose CT.

Our specialist radiologists, with background knowledge of the development of the program, are experts in the systems and reporting the NLCSP requires to successfully screen for lung cancer in asymptomatic Australians.

Low dose CT scanning is available at our clinics nationwide

As the largest network of radiology clinics in Australia, we offer a comprehensive range of scanning services at more than 200 clinics around the country, including low dose CT for lung screening.

  • Our expert lung imaging teams provide high quality, low dose CT scans and report back to referring doctors within 3 working days.

  • There are no costs associated with a lung screening scan at I-MED, we provide the low dose CT scans as part of the government’s bulk billed screening program.

  • Our staff are trained to answer patients' questions about the process and support patients every step of the way, from booking online to visiting the clinic for a lung scan through to receiving results for discussion with the referring doctor.

  • Patients can access our streamlined online booking system, available 24/7, and find the best time and location for a low-dose lung screening.

Webinar | Navigating the National Lung Cancer Screening Program

In readiness for the launch of the program, Professor Catherine Jones, member of the Expert Advisory Committee and Data Development Working Group for the NLCSP, and Dr Janu Pirakalathanan, contributor to the NLCSP since its inception in 2019, hosted a national webinar on Tuesday 13 May, focusing on:

  • the benefits of lung cancer screening in high-risk populations, related to the NLCSP

  • the eligibility criteria and referral pathway

  • interpretation of screening results and management of follow-up care.

The webinar is a CPD Accredited Activity for the RACGP and ACRRM CPD Program in the 2023-2025 triennium.
