Achieving Work-Life Balance in Tech: 3 Ways to Prevent Burnout

Written byKarla McNeilage, LinkedIn Top Voice.

Endless deadlines. Constant innovation. High expectations. An always "on" mindset.

Working in the high-pressure world of technology demands speed, agility, and relentless ambition.

But at what cost?

In the race to stay ahead, we often sacrifice more than we realize– prioritizing work over our own mental health and well-being.

It’s easy for ambitious professionals to slip into ‘hustle’ mode, and with it, comes bad habits and disrupted routines. Eventually, burnout and extreme physical and mental exhaustion take over.

At VivaTech 2025, we’ll celebrate incredible advancements like how AI is revolutionizing healthcare.

But when it comes to health and longevity, B2B and tech professionals need to find ways to stay ahead in an ever-evolving world of AI– without burning out.

Building a sustainable work-life balance and prioritizing your mental well-being might feel challenging, but here are 3 actionable ways to do it.

Set Boundaries

The tech world thrives on connection. But with connection comes the immense pressure to always be available. Setting – and sticking to – healthy boundaries creates a positive work environment for everyone.

Some simple ways to set boundaries include: having clear start and finish times, scheduling deep work blocks (like “no-meeting mornings”), and establishing company-wide norms that communication slows down during weekends and personal time.

Implement ‘Tech-Free’ Time

Technology might be your world, but your brain (and eyes!) need time away from screens. Tech-free time helps you stay present with the people around you, and have dedicated ‘me time.’

Take regular breaks from devices where possible– during meals, first thing in the morning and evening, or when you go for a walk. Your mind will thank you for it!

Practice Mindfulness

Mindfulness is a wonderful tool to help you make better decisions, communicate more effectively, and reduce stress.

A simple way to practice mindfulness daily is by adding habits like gratitude, meditation, or journaling to your routine. Moving your body is also key to clearing your mind, so make exercise a non-negotiable. Physical activity releases dopamine, the ‘feel-good’ chemical that boosts focus, motivation, and productivity. It’s a great way to reduce stress and instantly improve your mood!

VivaTech 2025 will showcase groundbreaking innovations that shape the future of healthcare. But we’re interested in the health and well-being of the people behind those innovations too.

By setting boundaries, unplugging when needed, and prioritizing mindfulness, we can build successful careers without sacrificing our well-being.

After all, going 100 kph isn’t sustainable for anyone. Eventually, we’ll run out of fuel. Self-care is the fuel that keeps us moving forward.

Thank you so much for the opportunity to write about such an important topic! I’m a huge advocate for prioritising your wellbeing and filling your cup up, especially in the era of ‘hustle’ and the internal/ external pressures of having to be ‘on’ and available 24/7. The way we look after ourselves and our mental and physical health can be instrumental to our success!
