Renewable Access Still Uneven
New Directives for Energy Authorities
The Swedish Government has issued new directives for both Svenska kraftnät and the Swedish Energy Agency, effective August 1. These aim to strengthen their roles in achieving fossil-free energy, secure supply, and competitive energy prices, aligning with the Tidö Agreement. Svenska kraftnät gains a clearer coordinating role for long-term electricity system planning, supported by a new electricity supply council. The Swedish Energy Agency is now tasked with providing a comprehensive analysis and assessment of the energy transition every four years, including supply security data from 2030.

EIB Boosts Wind and Grid Finance
The European Investment Bank has increased its 2025 financing ceiling to a record €100 billion under the EU Clean Industrial Deal, in a bid to de-risk investments and accelerate the deployment of clean energy in Europe. New counter‑guarantee packages include €1.5 billion for grid component manufacturers, €500 million for a corporate Power Purchase Agreement pilot programme, and €250 million for small- to mid‑sized green‑tech firms. Additionally, the existing counter‑guarantee for wind manufacturers has been raised from €5 billion to €6.5 billion to support supply‑chain scale‑up and technology deployment.
Renewable Access Still Uneven
A new SDG 7 report shows 92% of the world now has electricity access, but 666 million people, mostly in sub-Saharan Africa, remain without. Clean cooking access also lags, with 2.1 billion people relying on polluting fuels. Decentralized renewable energy is identified as critical for reaching remote areas. While international clean energy finance rose to $21.6 billion in 2023, major funding disparities persist. Progress remains off track to meet 2030 targets. The report calls for scaled-up financing and global cooperation to close access gaps and accelerate renewable energy deployment.
