A Courageous Pause for Powerful Progress

A Courageous Pause for Powerful Progress

Dear Readers,

Before you charge into the second half of the year, take a breath. This season tends to pile on more of everything—deadlines, decisions, and distractions. But courageous leadership requires more than speed and stamina. It requires space.

At Giant Leap Consulting, we believe that one of the boldest things a leader can do is pause. As I wrote in Leadership Two Words at a Time, “Taking a moment to pause helps reconnect you to your principles and ideals and recommits you to living with good character.”

In a world that glorifies busy, it’s easy to mistake motion for meaning. But even a few minutes of quiet reflection can center you, steady your nerves, and help you listen to your inner voice. It’s how we shift from reacting to leading—on purpose.

As you cross this mid-year threshold, I invite you to read this short reflection and consider: What’s driving your leadership right now? Is it urgency… or intention?

In Courage,

Bill

THE DAY I WASN’T COURAGEOUS

Morning weddings are more vibrant than those held in the afternoon. In the morning, flowers radiate with more intensity, people smile wider, and the sun is more forgiving. In Jacksonville, Florida, where summer temperatures can reach into the 90s before noon, getting married at any other time of day would be sheer insanity.

The Club Continental is one of Jacksonville’s most popular wedding venues. Built in 1922 by the heir of the founder of the Palmolive Soap Company, the Mediterranean-style mansion overlooks the expansive St. John’s River. Set among magnificent 200-year-old oak trees, draped with Spanish moss, Club Continental was the perfect setting for the nuptials of David, my nephew, and Christy, his beautiful bride.

What makes the unexpected terrifying is how it intrudes itself, often violently, on the comfort of the moment. I had just settled down to a full plate of prime rib and tomato salad when I heard my father urgently say, “Something’s wrong with Toby!” My eyes darted over to my mother, who was gasping for air, desperately waving her hands as if begging for help. My mother was choking to death.

For many years, Giant Leap has worked with the various operating companies of Southern Company, including Georgia Power, Alabama Power, Mississippi Power, and Southern Nuclear.

Southern Company recently launched its "Elevate Program" - an open-enrollment development program focused on career development. In May, Giant Leap led webinars on Connecting with Customers and Courageous Leadership. In the coming months will be leading other workshops online and in-person.

Contact Giant Leap if you're interested in developing your leaders so they can elevate your company's performance.

Since 2018, Giant Leap has delivered the Executive Leadership program for United Contractors, an association of construction companies based in California. Senior leaders from member companies come together to learn timeless principles of effective leadership while decompressing from the stressors of being in a leadership role.

The sessions are facilitated by GLC's founder, Bill Treasurer, and his long-time friend John "Coach" Havlik. In addition to being the co-author of Bill's book, The Leadership Killer, John is an ex-Navy SEAL officer who served with distinction. Oh yeah, did we mention that the sessions are held in Laguna Beach, California?

Since our founding in 2002, Giant Leap has included one-on-one leadership coaching as a way to strengthen the impact of our leadership programs. Research suggests that adding coaching increases a leadership program's effectiveness by over 80%. While leadership workshops are great at developing a common standard of leadership among a group of people, coaching allows for an individual focus for each program participant.

Besides all that, coaching helps GLC coaches keep their pulse on contemporary challenges facing the work world. In May alone, GLC coached over 45 leaders, as we do most months.

At Giant Leap Consulting, we believe professionalism isn’t just a set of behaviors—it’s a mindset rooted in character, commitment, and courage. In our Stepping It Up! workshop, participants explore the Seven C’s of Professionalism, reflect on the three types of workers (Go-Getters, Coasters, and Slackers), and dive into meaningful discussions like:

“What are the differences between a great employee and a less-than-great one?”

This isn’t your typical lecture. It’s an engaging, action-oriented experience designed to challenge assumptions, elevate performance, and inspire every participant to show up as their best professional self.
