Do Epic Good | July Newsletter Round-Up
This month in Good...
July is usually a month of warm(ish) days, light nights and lingering summer holidays that I wait all year for! This month, as I finish writing our monthly newsletter literally hours before a well-deserved break, I thought it would be a brief wrap before running out the door. But as it turns out, the last two weeks of July brought more hope and happiness to the world of sustainability than all year, I thought I needed to share the news as far and wide as our amazing community could support. So here goes..
Good Responsibility
Still buzzing from our most recent event Badass Women Redefining Responsible Leadership, Sophie Matthews and I co-wrote a powerful thought leadership article for Campaign Middle East discussing just how much influence brands now hold. Of the world’s 100 biggest economies, 69 are companies and 31 are countries, Netflix is bigger than Russia, and Prime Video & Amazon MGM Studios ranks as the 10th largest "nation" on Earth.
So what does that mean for us as marketers, creatives, and leaders? Keep reading…
Good (BRILLIANT) to know
Earlier this month we witnessed a landmark ruling: The UN's top court confirmed that governments MUST act on climate change and human rights or risk breaching international law. Spearheaded by the Pacific Islands Students Fighting Climate Change (PISFCC), who began the initiative in 2019 with 27 students from the The University of the South Pacific and backed by the government of Vanuatu, this case led to a powerful advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice (ICJ). Governments and corporations can now be held accountable for fuelling the climate crisis. This is a game-changing win for climate justice and a clear reminder of the power of persistence fuelled by collective courage.
Good to listen
Want to hear how this courtroom win became a global turning point? Tune into Christiana Figueres' Outrage + Optimism who breaks down the facts, bringing you raw, real-time reactions from the legal minds behind the ICJ ruling, and why it matters for all of us.
Good for business
More brilliant news this month in the world of sustainability... Morgan Stanley announce that almost nine out of ten companies see sustainability as a profit driver.
Adam Elman provides a beautiful summary of how top consultancies, including Deloitte, Forbes and PwC, are aligning on one message: sustainability is no longer a 'bolt-on', it's a core business strategy. This is more than good news, this is a clear signal that climate commitment is now a C-suite priority and true growth driver.
Good to support
I've long been a fan of Kresse Wesling CBE's work at Elvis & Kresse but this months collaboration with the Cartier Women's Initiative just made me love them even more! This limited edition bracelet created with Mariam Torosyan just 24 hours after the event is to support women in violence. This is the true power of fashion.
Full story here. And you can support by purchasing your limited edition bracelet here.
Good to innovate
Scientists at Yale University have discovered one of the most famous fungi in the Amazon rainforest Pestalotiopsis microspora, naturally eats plastic and converts it into organic compounds. It's known to survive on polyurethane as its sole carbon source, secreting enzymes that are then used as the fungi as it's energy source. What's left behind is biodegradable waste. Although this is still in the experimental stage, could this be the answer to our global plastic pollution?
Good to do
Last but not least, here's a fun quiz to test your plastic knowledge!
