Does FOMO work for your business? Ask Clubhouse
Does #FOMO work for your business? Just ask Clubhouse! At the time of writing (March 2021), Clubhouse announced it has 10 million users, which doesn’t seem vast considering its popularity, and especially when you compare this to other social media platforms like Facebook with a 2.8 billion users and Instagram with a billion. But THIS is the appeal of Clubhouse mayking you, the audience, feel like you are missing out if you are not part of the 10 mill.

I initially ignored requests and invitations to join the new Clubhouse app but it was Clare Muscat - Customer Experience Rockstar who convinced me to give it a closer look. And I am so glad that I did. Clare had the good fortune to be in Gary Vaynerchuck's room the first time he spoke. He'd been monitoring it for a while before he decided to speak and expressed his thoughts on the platform which were all extremely positive.
Charlie Whyman from The Curious Marketing Club also encouraged me to go on and gave me incredibly sound advice including:
- avoid the large rooms
- have deep and meaningful conversations with others
- be wary of the "experts" who are spending all day in Clubhouse professing to help you to get to 6-7 figures very quickly.
- There are a lot of marketers who are spoiling it for the others, so before you invest in someone, perform your due diligence!
Clubhouse launched in March 2020. It is like tapping into other people's live conversations through the comfort of an app! The range of people can be immense, and it can give you, as a speaker, an audience of more than 5,000 people in one room. So, when Elon Musk appeared in a room to speak, it broke the internet, trended on Twitter and caused so much commotion, mayking invites to Clubhouse like the Golden Ticket in the Willy Wonka movie.
So why did it attract Elon Musk to come into Clubhouse? Because it gave him access to an audience immediately. When people heard he was in Clubhouse, the tweeters were tweeting, the message got out and people were clamouring to get in. Clubhouse initally invited high profile outspoken people to be part of the beta testers, and this is why it has gained popularity so quickly. People were gaining access to the likes of celebrities and entrepreneurs and felt like they were missing out, thereby creating FOMO and telling others about the easy access to certain celebrities and entrepreneurs. The word spread like wildfire and if you didn't have an iPhone, you felt like you were missing out. Here's Elon Musk Interview on Clubhouse
I attended my dear friend's Neal Schaffer’s rooms and one important thing I learned from Neal is to be selective in who you follow. This advice goes against the grain to other social media platform advice. The reason for this is because Clubhouse has an algorithm that recommends rooms for you, based on people that you follow so if you follow everybody, you may be recommended rooms that you have no interest in. Neal also recommends completing your bio out entirely as it gives people the opportunity to learn about you before they decide to connect with you on other social media platforms like Instagram and Twitter.
Neal is the author of The Age of Influence and also has an incredible podcast called Maximise Your Social Influence with Neal Schaffer. Here is Neal's thoughts Clubhouse:
Episode 196: My Initial Thoughts on Clubhouse, the Newest Social Media App (24/1/2021)
Episode 198: I'm On Clubhouse. Now What? (10/2/2021)
Neal also talked about how Clubhouse could help you get started if you were thinking of starting a podcast. So, do yourself a favour and check out his enlightening podcast!
Neal's Clubhouse is also on every Monday: 5pm UK time | 9am Pacific |
Why has Clubhouse generated all this FOMO? First of all, you have to be invited, so that is the magic factor of the Clubhouse narrative and who want to be a part of an invite-only club? Android users are getting FOMO and some are even buying cheap iPads or iPhones on eBay in order to get in on Clubhouse. Note: Clubhouse is only available to Apple devices at the time of writing.
What can we learn from #CLUBHOUSEFOMO?
If you have a business with a niche, stick with what you niche and don't be afraid to stand out from the crowd like Clubhouse does. Create that buzz and excitement about your product or service offering and get others to shout about it too. You can create your own FOMO within Clubhouse but based on the advice I have received from Charlie, Neal and others, you need to schedule time to experiment.
Receive your invite, take part in Clubhouse rooms, and then write about all your amazing experiences there and the people you meet. I can also advise to also shine a spotlight on other people. I created my room recently with Dan Holloway, who is incredible to learn from, in areas relating to marketing, strategy and growing and scaling your business. What we have done in our collaborative room is to help each other while giving other people more visibiliTEA and publiciTEA in their own expertise.
#CLUBHOUSEFOMO with Dan Holloway, Kay Dudman, John Espirian and others
Here's a LinkedIn post where Dan, Carly Twigg, Kay, John and others shared their valuable insights into how they've created FOMO for their own business.
Sharing the virtual stage with other people and sharing your knowledge to help and support other people, is what Clubhouse has enabled me to do. Another thing to note is you can’t record the audio on Clubhouse. I love sharing the advice that I've learned from from one platform to another, and so I tweet what I have learned from other people and tag them on Twitter, I'll copy and paste the advice and post onto Instagram Stories. Once I have tweeted 30-50 tweets within the hour, I will convert the content into a LinkedIn and/or Instagram post, time permitting.
#CLUBHOUSEFOMO with Dan Holloway - every Friday 11am GMT
You can see how Clubhouse conversations can transfer onto other platforms through conversations. The conversations you are having in Clubhouse. could potentially turn into clients when you give them FOMO by sharing the advice you have learned on Twitter, LinkedIn and Instagram.
Can you generate Leads from CLUBHOUSE?
Absolutely! Ian Pownall has been supporting me on clubhouse and gone off to do some incredible stuff on this platform. He said Clubhouse has changed his business and he absolutely loves it. Some words of advice from Ian:
- If you run a room, let the conversation go a little longer if you can.
- Do an all-day clubhouse – he's picked up clients that way.
- Make other people moderators if you can’t stay on for 8 hours.
So! Does FOMO work for your business? Ask Clubhouse! Clubhouse continues to create FOMO and you can create FOMO for your own business too. See you on the other side. Gratitude for Clubhouse conversations and the communiTEA of Clubhouse.

4yMy comment wasn’t so much that marketers are ruining it but that there are a huge number of people offering advice based off something they have heard someone else say and not enough context is being added so if anyone wants to take advice on board then check out the person giving advice before investing lots into the action
