Embracing Your Own Definition of Success as the Year Ends

Embracing Your Own Definition of Success as the Year Ends

As the year draws to a close, there's a prevalent belief entrenched in our minds—finish strong, or you haven't truly run the year. Especially in Africa, there's an unsolicited pressure that peers exert, where the narrative of finishing the year robustly is akin to emerging as a victor in life's race.

I stand in opposition to this prevailing notion. As we approach the year's end, it's not about the strength of your finish but about the acknowledgment that you gave it your all. It's about recognizing that what you accomplished, experienced, or lost was part and parcel of the journey called life.

The concept of growth and progress need not conform to a set pattern or compare with others' achievements. Our mindset needs to evolve. It's about understanding that your journey, your achievements, and your losses are uniquely yours. True progress lies in being content with who you are and acknowledging that your version of progress is just as valid.

In the midst of societal expectations to conclude the year in a blaze of glory, we often overlook the beauty in simply being. Your journey is yours alone, and the milestones you achieve might not align with conventional standards—and that's perfectly okay.

Allow this year's end not to be a marker of comparison or a race to the finish line but a testament to your individual growth. Your journey might not be comprehensible to others, but it's yours to cherish. Embrace the progress you've made, the lessons learned, and the person you've become.

Let us redefine the closure of the year. It's not about finishing strong; it's about finishing with the assurance that you've walked your path with integrity, sincerity, and the best of intentions. Your definition of progress might not resonate with societal norms, but it's your truth—and that's what truly matters.

As we prepare to bid adieu to this year, let us celebrate our unique journeys and embrace the beauty in simply being ourselves.

"Progress isn't about emulating others; it's about being authentic in your journey."

"the beauty in simply being" - the message in there words hits hard. We're constantly on the look out for that next thing, but in essence, basking in our presence, who we are and what we have is mostly enough. Just takes awareness and intention.
