Fear Not The Emptiness, Only the Clutter

Fear Not The Emptiness, Only the Clutter

Those that think writing is easy should consider creating something for public consumption. One of the most misunderstood parts of being a writer is the state of “emptiness.” While most people think about Buddhism and reaching enlightenment as part of life’s journey, writers often lack patience and try to force themselves past this state of mind.

Reaching a state of emptiness in writing is a far better position to be in than most people realize. If you consider for a moment, how productive do you become as a writer if your head is full of clutter? Are you writing fluidly, and the words seem to flow, or are you struggling and losing the joy of your profession?

When people associate emptiness and loneliness with the same sentence, they create unnecessary drama. By creating an empty mind, you allow yourself new and fresh ideas and thoughts to occupy your space. Brainstorming is a necessity for a writer. How easy is it to brainstorm if your head is full of clutter?

Emptiness should not be feared. This state of mind has zero to do with loneliness.

The peace we achieve when writing during an “empty” moment gives us a refreshing view encouraging patience and openness. Clutter does nothing more than force words on a paper and wastes valuable energy.

How, then, do you reach emptiness when writing? Similar to mediation, if you feel cluttered, what forces you through a brick wall to get to the other side?

  • The first step, stop writing. Take a long walk with no real destination in mind. Consider taking a 30-minute to nowhere to move away from the keyboard and phone.
  • Second, only returning to the keyboard when you feel the clutter you felt 30 minutes ago is no longer time of mind.
  • Third, writing should be only treated as an escape from other realities if this provides you with a sense of peace and no additional clutter.

If writing becomes a chore, you will only increase the clutter between your ears.

Emptiness is not a perfect state of mind; however, knowing how you can achieve this in the future will only build your love for writing. By then, the enjoyment of the words you placed on a piece of paper will become more gratifying.

Visionary!

I love "being in the writing zone." My mind is full of things to write about, but it's not clutter. It's exciting and inspirational.
