From Scarcity to Abundance: My Journey with Money, Fitness & Purpose
Hi friends,
This week’s newsletter is a more personal one. I want to share with you a behind-the-scenes look at my life lately—both the wins and the growth moments—and what it taught me about mindset, money, and what truly matters.
🏒 A Championship Win & My Hockey Story
March 2025 has been one of the best months of my life—on the ice and off. I play for the Hounds in the Victoria Hockey League (a competitive beer league), and we just won the championship. It meant the world to me.
I joined the team last fall, after a two-year wait on the sub list. I'm the oldest player by far, but I love the level of play and the camaraderie. We weren't the favorites as this is the team's first year in this league. We still made it to the final playoff round and won in game five.
What made it even more special was having Kehla’s family—her parents and grandmother—there in the stands. It reminded me of why I keep pushing myself and what makes these moments unforgettable.
🏋️♂️ Best Fitness Week of My Life
From January to March, I worked on lifting progressions in the gym and running. So, in March, it was time to retest and see if my hard work had paid off.
In the same week, I hit personal records on three lifts as well as running a PB half marathon:
Tuesday: Box Squat: 405 lbs
Wednesday: Strict Press: 185 lbs
Thursday: Sumo Deadlift: 525 lbs
And then Sunday, I ran a half marathon in Comox in 1:35:12—an 18-minute PR from 10 years ago, on a course with double the elevation, in the wind and rain. It capped off the best training week I’ve ever had.
The biggest takeaway from this experience? The goal is never to be perfect—it’s to be consistent. Consistency combined with intensity helped me achieve new personal bests.
💼 Business Update
I’m now working with 8 amazing households as a financial planner and have 3–4 more in the pipeline. My clients are mostly Canadian business owners and incorporated professionals. I'm incredibly grateful for every one of them.
Growth has been steady—not fast, but intentional.
I onboard clients one at a time and take a highly personalized approach. I'm not chasing volume. I'm building relationships that are expected to last multiple decades. That’s the vision.
If you're curious about what it's like to work together, let's talk!
💰 From Scarcity to Abundance: My Money Mindset Shift
For a 10-year period of my life, I was consumed by scarcity. Even as a high-income earner, I constantly felt like I didn’t have enough. I clung to my budget spreadsheet like a lifeline, and couldn't learn how to live outside the spreadsheet.
But I’ve lived many “money lives.” I’ve been:
A university student on a tight budget
A six-figure salaried employee
A startup business owner earning $10–20K/year
And now, someone who’s spent nearly $100K of my own money over the past 25 months to grow a business I believe in.
So, what changed? How could one adopt an abundant mindset and have a healthy relationship with money instead of being controlled by the sense of never having enough?
I stopped letting money define my safety or self-worth.
I shifted focus from control and perfection to alignment and purpose. Today, I don’t obsess over numbers. I obsess over impact, process, and enjoying the ride. Strangely enough, that’s when the money side started to sort itself out.
🧠 Two Quotes That Changed My Thinking
“The goal is not to be perfect—it’s to be consistent.”
“What you don’t change, you choose.”
Those two ideas reshaped how I approach life, fitness, business, and money.
📘 The Book That Brought It All Together
Sahil Bloom’s The Five Types of Wealth gave me the language I didn’t have before. He talks about building wealth in five areas:
Financial, Social, Physical, Mental and Time Wealth.
Chasing only financial wealth—like I used to—leads to imbalance. Real wealth is a blend of all five. That’s the lens I now use when I plan with clients, too.
🏗️ If You're Building Something…
If you’re a business owner or on a big mission, I get it. Building something that’s aligned with your values takes time, patience, and sacrifice. I chose this harder path not because I had to, but because I knew it was the only one that would truly fulfill me.
So here’s my message to you:
Have a plan—know your numbers and what having “enough” means
Spend in alignment with what brings you joy
Chase mastery, not just money
Optimize today, not just tomorrow
Money is just a tool. It should support your life—not the other way around.
