Hard at work on Wednesday

The first full day of the GP 2025 official programme included a ministerial roundtable on financing for DRR: multistakeholder plenaries on regional progress and on leaving no one behind; several thematic sessions; a special event on Africa; and a side event on disasters and displacement.

Get a detailed summary of the events, sessions and highlights, provided by IISD Earth Negotiations Bulletin:

Priority actions for resilient recovery readiness

At the World Resilient Recovery Conference, leaders launched the Priority Actions to Enhance Readiness for Resilient Recovery – to accelerate implementation of Priority Action 4 of the Sendai Framework: Enhancing disaster preparedness for effective response and to “Build Back Better” in recovery, rehabilitation and reconstruction.

Updated information about 282 hazards

UNDRR and the International Science Council have launched a new edition of their comprehensive hazard guide The Hazard Information Profiles now cover 282 hazards—from wildfires to cyberattacks. Reflecting today's complex and interconnected risks, the updated guide emphasises a multi-hazard approach, which is essential for early warnings, emergency planning, and resilience.

... and the 2025 RISK Award winner is....!

The day's programme wrapped up with an award ceremony: and we congratulate ChildFund Bolivia on winning the 2025 RISK Award! Their project helps wildfire-prone Indigenous communities keep schools open and resilient during climate emergencies. The initiative empowers children and teachers to lead local disaster preparedness, combining Indigenous knowledge with tech tools. The UNDRR and Munich Re award is given every two years, providing up to €100,000 to support innovative risk reduction and disaster management projects.

Do you know the REAL cost of disasters?

The global cost of disasters is growing: The economic burden of disasters is intensifying. While the direct costs of disasters averaged $70–80 billion a year between 1970 and 2000, between 2001 and 2020 these annual costs grew significantly to $180–200 billion.

But the real cost is far higher. Disaster costs now exceed over $2.3 trillion annually when cascading and ecosystem costs are taken into account. The Global Assessment Report (GAR) 2025: Resilience Pays: Financing and Investing for our Future explains how smarter investment can re-set the destructive cycle of disasters, debt, un-insurability and humanitarian need that threatens a climate-changed world.
