Got A Lead On A Great Book That's Impacted Your Work, Life, or Leadership? Tell Me About It!

Got A Lead On A Great Book That's Impacted Your Work, Life, or Leadership? Tell Me About It!

I've been told I'm a voracious reader. (I don't see myself as one. With two boys, who are 8 and 4 years old, and a daughter who's a year-and-a-half old, by the time I get around to what can pass as daddy reading time, the only reading I tend to do is whether the bed or the couch is a better spot to collapse.)

Instead, I think it's more that I like sharing books that I'm reading and what I might take away from each.

But I do love reading. There's just something special about someone walking you through the sensibility they want you to understand and the experiences they want you to feel in the world they create and design, whether theirs is a work of fiction or non-fiction.

And reading opens your eyes to possibilities. There are so many lessons out there to learn and stories to be told that even if you don't have those types of lessons available to you in your everyday life, there's no reason you can't seek them out.

Leadership is curiosity, understanding, and communication...there really is no book from which you can't take leadership lessons away.

As a Leadership Performance Coach, I read all kinds of books. Yes, I do have books that specifically target leadership -- that may be obvious and expected -- but I also read different books from across the spectrum of topics as you'll note in the list of books at the end of this post.

In general, I don't believe there is anything, any message or idea, you can't apply to leadership. In some way, every topic can be factored into someone's experience, approach, demeanor, and perception when it comes to leadership development.

Although the pillars of leadership for me are curiosity, self-awareness, communication, and consideration, they are merely the foundation for so many other attributes that contribute to our leadership. So, there really is no book from which you can't take leadership lessons away.

All these books below can contribute to leadership.

The value is in seeing those lessons are available and taking them away from their source to store them in our mental toolbox for our growth and evolution as we move forward.

Who can really track all the best books to read out there, though, on their own, really having a good idea of what kind of treasure each book might hold?

That's where my new video and podcast series, The Book Leads: Impactful Books For Life & Leadership, comes in.

In this series I want to reach out into my network of partners, colleagues, contacts, and friends to hear about the books that have impacted and influenced their approach to work, life, and/or leadership in a meaningful way. (The lessons you learn in life can cross into leadership, and vice-versa. Everything ties into each other in some capacity.)

So often, connections on social media and I have shared what we were reading and what we thought about those reads, comparing notes and impressions.

Why not capture a deeper conversation about it?

It's one thing for someone to recommend a book; it's another for them to walk you through an overview of why they're recommending it and why it made such an impact on them while narrating how they weave it into their own experience, providing insight from what they've lived.

And that's where you come in.

I want to know which book has impacted you the most.

Even if it's not work- or business-related, or viewed through any of the usual lenses through which we view leadership, which book has stood out to you, pointing out great lessons to you, serving as an invaluable reference point and guiding beacon, and which you can share with the rest of us.

I'd love for you to join me for a conversation covering that book.

I want to know which book has impacted you the most.

In terms of what I'd love to see covered, we can cover:

  1. A book of your choice that stands out to you;

  2. A book we can compare notes on, whether it's one we've both read before or would read together and discuss on the series; or

  3. A book you've written yourself! (I've noticed that several members of my network are writing books! If you'd like to join me to discuss a book you've published, reach out to give this audience a view into what they can take away from what you've shared!)

Below are Episodes 0 and 1, available on the YouTube page for The Book Leads podcast, where I give a brief introduction to the series. Or listen on Spotify.

Here are some of the audio links:

So, let me know! Reach out. Let's get to some great books, stories, and takeaways.

Those treasures exist right here in our network.

Let's share that with others!

Gosh there’s so many books where do we begin? interesting I started writing a book 2 years ago and with the help of Prati Kaufman she helped me refine some of it. It truly takes a deep dive into my childhood in the trauma that I lived through and the purpose of writing my book was actually to release so much emotional baggage that I had been caring for so long as an adult. and one day had hoped for the book or my words to help those in a similar place.
