How do we stop measuring the wrong things?

How do we stop measuring the wrong things?

I hope you had a lovely weekend and are enjoying these beautiful spring days. These are the days when, walking in the woods with our dogs, I wrestle with the contrast of the beauty of nature and the fragility of our world.

What will the future look like, I ask myself.

It feels more obvious than ever that the current system isn't working; for nature, for people, or communities.

Yet, every news bulletin tells us that we HAVE to continue to grow, grow, grow - at whatever and all costs.

For decades, we've been sold the idea that endless economic growth equals progress.

But deep down, we know better.

Growth at all costs is pushing our planet beyond safe limits and failing to deliver what truly matters: wellbeing, fairness, and a thriving future for all.

It feels as though the time has come for a transformation at speed and scale..

What might a better future look like?

It's a question I have been asking for some time and have been particularly inspired by the important and focused work of Kate Raworth, Jason Hickel, Tim Jackson, and Roman Krznaric as I have tried to better understand the topic.

Post-growth and degrowth offer a new vision; one where economic success is measured not by GDP, but by health, happiness, and harmony with nature. It's the kind of future I would like for my children and future generations.

This is not about shrinking economies but redesigning them to prioritise what really counts.

Recent research in The Lancet Planetary Health Post-growth: the science of wellbeing within planetary boundaries confirms what many of us feel: a fairer, healthier world is possible, but only if we rethink the way we live and do business.

So, what’s stopping us? Fear? Habit? A lack of alternatives?

 Let’s change that.

We need catalyse courageous conversations about what comes next.

We know we have the solutions, we're 'simply' missing three things:

✅ Implementation

✅ Implementation

✅ Implementation

Where to Start:

🔗 My recent LinkedIn post includes resources and lots of food for thought that inspire me

🔗 Watch The Great Transition  - a really inspiring, insightful short video to show what the future could look like if we implement the solutions we already have. I LOVE this!

🔗 Explore the work of The Post Growth Institute, Kate Raworth on Doughnut Economics and thought leaders like Jason Hickel and Prof. Tim Jackson.

We can’t afford business-as-usual.

We need to build a future where businesses, communities, and ecosystems thrive together - a future we will be proud to shape for the next generation

I'm delighted to invite you to the second of our People, Planet, Pictures collaboration with Storyhouse, Chester. This People Planet Pictures screening has been scheduled to mark Earth Day on April 22.

After the 6pm screening of Escape from Extinction: Rewilding there will be a panel discussion with Simon Dowell, Conservation Science Policy  Director at Chester Zoo, Emily Lake Senior Project Officer at Cheshire Wildlife Trust and John Burgess from Make It Wild.

Narrated by Academy Award winner Meryl Streep, this fascinating, inspiring, and timely documentary follows the scientific experts on the frontlines of conservation as they seek to answer the question:

Can the world be saved when so much has already been lost?

The earth is rapidly approaching a sixth mass extinction event, with a quarter of all species under threat. However, there is still hope.

Armed with a radical new vision known as ‘rewilding’, follow the world’s top environmental leaders on a spectacular journey across six continents as they work to rebuild ecosystems, restore biodiversity, and even transform lives.

From the cloud forests of Rwanda to the California coast, this bold new approach to wildlife conservation is not without its challenges. However, it may just be the solution to finding a sustainable balance between our delicate natural world and the demands of a growing human population.
