🎙️I Heard Passion on the Airwaves—And It Changed How I Thought About Introverts and Impact

🎙️I Heard Passion on the Airwaves—And It Changed How I Thought About Introverts and Impact

Recently, I was driving when I caught a radio interview with someone who had a rather unusual job title: Pitch Architect. His job? Looking after the grass playing surface of Singapore’s National Stadium.

But within minutes of listening, I forgot about grass and sports turf.

What I heard was pure, infectious passion.

This wasn’t someone just doing a job. It was someone living out a calling—one that matched his love for the outdoors, his technical knowledge, and a growing sense of purpose. Even the radio hosts—usually cool and witty—were drawn in by his energy. They started asking deeper questions, feeding off his enthusiasm. You could hear them smiling.

That’s when it hit me: This is what powerful communication sounds like—not loud, not flashy, but deeply aligned with who you are and why you care.

And it made me reflect: As career introverts, we often hesitate to speak up unless we’re sure we have something useful to say. We avoid self-promotion. But when we find the space to talk about something we truly believe in—something meaningful—we can light up a room (or a radio station) in our own way.

Why This Matters for Career Introverts

You don’t have to be the loudest person in the room to make an impression. But you do have to show people what lights you up.

When introverts speak with purpose:

  • Others listen more attentively

  • Your quiet confidence becomes magnetic

  • You’re no longer trying to sell yourself—you're simply sharing what drives you

  • And in doing so, you help others see your value, even without a flashy elevator pitch

When I Speak About What I Do

I’ve experienced this first-hand.

Whenever someone asks me what I do—whether I say I’m a career coach, a writer, or a facilitator—I notice something shifts the moment I share why I do it.

When I start describing how I work with mid-career introverts to help them redesign their careers in ways that feel aligned, meaningful, and energising—eyes light up. Not just mine, but theirs too.

People lean in. They want to know more. Not because I said something clever or practiced a perfect pitch—but because I was speaking from a place of conviction. It’s something I’ve lived, wrestled with, and built a life around.

I often remind my clients: when you speak from purpose, people can sense it. No shouting needed.

Practical Steps to Speak with Passion and Purpose (Without Shouting)

Here are some small but powerful steps to help you start:

1. Pinpoint What You Care About Most

Ask yourself:

  • What parts of your work give you quiet satisfaction?

  • When have you surprised yourself by talking a lot about something?

  • What would you still be interested in, even if no one paid you?

That’s your spark.

2. Craft “Soft Stories” You Can Use

Instead of memorising a formal pitch, shape a few short stories that show:

  • How you solved a real problem

  • Why a certain challenge mattered to you

  • What you're learning that excites you

These are far more powerful than job titles.

3. Use Your Platform—on Your Terms

If you prefer writing to speaking, share posts, comments, or reflections (even short ones) on LinkedIn or other platforms. Build visibility your way, not based on extroverted norms.

4. Practice in Safe Spaces

Try sharing your story with a trusted friend or coach. Watch their reactions. Refine it. You’ll build quiet confidence—and feel less robotic when you say it the next time.

5. Link Your Role to a Bigger Picture

Just like the pitch architect didn’t talk only about grass, neither should you limit yourself to tasks. Speak about impact—on users, teams, or systems. This shows purpose, not just process.

You Don’t Have to Be Loud—Just Aligned

I’ve seen this over and over in my coaching work and in my own life. When a career introvert connects the dots between passion, purpose, and presence—magic happens.

That’s why I wrote the Career Introvert’s Guide series: to offer quiet strategies that help you be seen, heard, and respected without the pressure to shout.

Because when we speak from the inside out—not from a script—people don’t just hear us. They feel us.

And sometimes, that’s all it takes to change a conversation—and a career.
