leading in the customs environment.
Yesterday I went to pass my condolences to a bereaved team member who had lost his one and only sibling. As I left the cemetery, a few things were going through my mind. As a leader in the customs environment, I have no control over a lot of things. I have no decision to make about taking or giving life, but there are a few things that I have control over. Working as a customs officer entails working away from home and often missing out on important community and social gatherings such as funerals and weddings. I have always made it a point to support my coworkers who are grieving because I think that only we can understand why we are constantly missing out on such events, which is why it is important to be there for each other.
Even though I cannot give life, I can give love, I can give hope, I can give empathy, I can give a prayer, I can give a listening ear, I can give a compliment, I can give emotional support, I can give encouragement, I can empower, I can hold someone's hand and I can make someone smile in a sad moment.
All these do not drain my pocket. Food for thought.
