✨ Leading from the Centre: A Life-Enhancing Approach to Uncertainty
Dear friends,
Over the past few weeks, I’ve been listening deeply—to conversations with clients, reflections from fellow practitioners, and a rich dialogue sparked on LinkedIn.
One theme has been echoing through it all:
👉 In uncertain times, Life-Enhancing Leadership means learning to lead from the centre.
Not from a place of certainty or control. But from grounded presence, trust, and responsive intention.
This edition is a reflection on what it means to lead not with all the answers, but with a steady orientation toward growth—of ourselves, our teams, and the systems we serve.
💫 Leading from the Centre
To lead from the centre is to hold a clear intention and purpose, while remaining open to being reshaped by the journey.
It means:
Trusting the process, even when the next step isn’t obvious
Balancing support with challenge
Creating alignment without imposition
Listening deeply, especially when the stakes are high
This is not passive leadership. It’s active awareness—a commitment to presence over performance, and to shaping the system with others, not for them.
📖 A Moment from the Field
I was coaching and co-facilitating a leadership process within an organisation developing a new product, platform, and business model.
After months of engagement, we had over a thousand ideas—and more than 50 business concepts, rich with possibility. But standing in front of the executive team and a room of managers, the question arose:
How do we ground this into reality?
My colleague turned to me and asked, “What do we do next?” I paused and said honestly, “I don’t know… what if we just trust the process?”
And as soon as we relaxed into that space of not-knowing, something shifted. Someone from the organisation stood up and said, “I know what to do next.” He began weaving the ideas into a framework he’d quietly been shaping. More voices joined in. And suddenly, something magical happened—clarity without imposition, alignment without control.
Everyone knew where they were going. And more importantly, they trusted each other to find the way forward—together.
That moment stays with me. A powerful reminder that sometimes, leadership means stepping back so others can step in.
🌱 Life-Enhancing Leadership as Development-in-Action
Seen this way, Life-Enhancing Leadership is not a title or a set of competencies—it’s a practice of becoming more fully who we are.
Through the lens of adult development and coaching, leadership becomes an evolving awareness of:
Who we are in relationship to the systems we shape and serve
How we respond to challenge, paradox, and ambiguity
What supports us in staying present when we’d rather retreat into control
Leadership coaching offers a powerful frame for this journey—integrating awareness, purpose, and choice. And when we meet our development edge—individually or collectively—it’s not a failure. It’s a threshold for exploration.
When leaders grow, the system can grow with them.
🌍 Creating Conditions Where Everyone Can Thrive
At its most life-enhancing, leadership is not about being at the top. It’s about creating the conditions for others to rise.
That means:
Cultivating psychological safety, so people can bring their full selves
Anchoring in shared purpose, so effort is meaningful, not just productive
Encouraging developmental stretch, so people are invited to grow—not just perform
When we lead from the centre, we create space for the system to evolve—through compassion, courage, and creativity.
🔍 A Question for You
Where in your leadership are you holding on too tightly? And where might you be called to soften, listen, and realign from the centre?
Here’s what others are saying:
“I’ve been gripping our old strategy too hard—it’s time to listen to what’s emerging in our people.”
“I rush to solve problems—realigning means pausing, letting the team shape the next step.”
“My job is no longer to have the answers, but to hold the space for wiser questions and conversations.”
💬 What does leading from the centre mean in your context?
I’d love to hear your reflections— comment and join the conversation below.
🌿 Looking Ahead
In next month’s issue, we’ll explore transformational leadership—and how leading from the centre means offering both challenge and support in ways that stretch potential without breaking trust.
Until then, stay grounded, stay curious, and keep leading from the centre.
Go well,
Andy

4moThanks for the insight, Andrew! “Leading from the centre” nails the challenge I often face: offering just enough scaffolding for the team without handing them the blueprint. When I strike that balance, the long-term team growth outweighs the short-term quick wins. Looking forward to exploring this further together in our MIT CPO sessions!
