Learn From Nokia's Mistakes

Learn From Nokia's Mistakes

While I was finishing my year-end report, suddenly my cell phone rang and I saw a friend in Medan whom I knew very well. "Assalamu'alaikum, Mr. Mardi. How are you, sir?" then with a smile I replied greetings and gave the news, "Wassalamu'alaikum, thank God, Mr. Widodo. I hope Mr. Widodo is also in good and healthy condition." It did not feel like 30 minutes had passed, I listened carefully to every word that Mr. Widodo said to me. Every now and then I respond and provide feedback and some useful information for Mr. Widodo and the team in Medan City.

In my opinion, what Mr. Widodo did was like describing an emergency and a need for assistance from the work team. There is a sincere expression to ask for my help to come to Medan City and help him and his team to improve the conditions of the working team there. According to Mr. Widodo, the current condition of the work team is not good and urgent action needs to be taken to improve it. I caught Pak Widodo's seriousness and immediate need to awaken and restore team spirit. "Mr. Mardi, I would like to ask for your help to come to Medan City to help me and the team grow and develop again like in previous years."

I was stunned and very eager to help Pak Widodo and his work team. Restore the glory that had been inscribed nationally. respected by all colleagues and feared by competitors. I have already envisioned quick and tactical steps to realize the hopes of Mr. Widodo and the team. Whatever background and reasons Mr. Widodo conveyed to me, management should be fully appreciated and supported. I see there is a strong initiative and drive to change for the better and continue to grow. This is a positive value that is a sign that they realize that something is wrong and must be corrected immediately so as not to collapse.

I am reminded of the story of the largest mobile phone manufacturer from Finland. Who is not familiar with the Nokia mobile phone brand? I am very sure that all parties know well and become a customer of Nokia mobile phones, including myself who is so proud and happy with several models of Nokia mobile phones, namely the 3310 series, 3315, Communicator (premium class), and others that I forgot the series. That was when Nokia was victorious around the world in 2000. But slowly and surely Nokia's glory was beaten and battered by the Apple iPhone and Android. from the articles and writings that I read about why Nokia finally fell and sank, according to the confession of the CEO of Nokia, he felt he had done nothing wrong, but why did he lose. Complete like this, "We did nothing wrong, but how can we lose." Those were the last words from Nokia CEO, Stephen Elop after announcing that the giant mobile phone company was bought by Microsoft at a price of 7.2 billion US dollars, or around Rp. 79 trillion.

Based on the facts above, I caught a condition that was not good but admitted that no errors had occurred. Figures and other data show that Nokia is doing something wrong and will suffer heavy losses. But it is too late to make amends because the ego of a leader does not see well and admits he made a mistake. as a confession, he could have taken the decision to resign from his position. or it could be that Stephen Elop immediately found a more suitable replacement and quickly corrected all his mistakes. in fact, pride and personal ego beat conscience to provide improvement and change for the better.

What was done by Mr. Widodo and the team in my opinion should be followed up immediately and given a solution in the shortest possible time? Pak Widodo certainly knows better and feels what is going on between him and the work team. they see the need for immediate action and in-depth assistance so that they and their team get out of the crisis immediately. they do not want the current office to close because it is not performing well. but it is possible that one day their branch office will be closed because it is increasingly difficult from an operational point of view to maintain.

As an expert in the field of building and developing a solid and positive impact team. I was able to get important points and a clear picture of the vision that must be done to turn adversity into an advantage. I have the right experience and competence to accompany them if it is officially requested by Pak Widodo's leadership. this condition can be overcome quickly with visits and direct observations in the field. listen directly to their complaints and opinions in the field.

Invite the team to dissect actively-participative provide input in every step and how to solve the problems faced by Pak Widodo's team. Conduct rapid screening of conditions that make or do not support the team's progress at work. Perform analysis of available tools and adapt to stakeholder mapping. Coupled with stakeholder engagement and seeing the gaps in the mapping. Execute every input that comes in and immediately carry out a fast and parallel evaluation. Back To formulate a quick strategy to replace the old method. Several recommendations from experts need to be submitted and carried out with the support of all parties and are generous in responding to each impact. It is undeniable that the involvement of all parties, including external parties, has become a strong driving force and support to restore this glory. They must have high awareness and initiative to carry out every planned way effectively and efficiently.

This is not only on paper, but must be in line with practice in the field and immediately executed. Given that there are only 3 months left, then all parties must immediately welcome and encourage any positive changes. Get rid of all the attached positions, and immediately join the carriage of change and restore the glory. It reminds me of a Mining proverb that says: "Bangkik Batang Tarandam" Mambangkik Batang tarandam is one of the proverbs that live in Minangkabau society. The proverb means to revive the honour or honour that has long been buried or neglected due to a situation. Move on and complete the change and restore glory to those in need!
