Luck Favors the Bold (and the Slightly Delusional)

Do you ever look around and feel as if others seem to have more luck than you? You know, that magical force we blame when things go wrong and credit when things go right? Turns out, luck isn’t just a cosmic roll of the dice—it’s a skill. And yes, you can make your own luck. 🍀

This recent piece by Nir Eyal "The Surprisingly Strong Case for Luck in Sales" (https://www.nirandfar.com/luck-in-sales/)

It is especially true in sales where there are individuals who seem to harness luck and "fall on their feet", but is that really the case, and it got me thinking; luck isn’t just for salespeople. It’s for anyone willing to put in the work, take a few risks, and maybe embarrass themselves a little.

The essence of this seems to be that luck favors the bold, the prepared, and the slightly delusional optimists. According to research, lucky people share four traits:

  1. They’re open to opportunities.

  2. They trust their gut.

  3. They’re optimists (hello, self-fulfilling prophecies).

  4. They’re resilient.

In other words, luck isn’t about waiting for the stars to align—it’s about showing up, doing the work, and maybe wearing your lucky socks. 🧦

Fail Forward, Fail Faster, Fail Funnier

Here’s how you can start making your own luck:

Get uncomfortable. Luck doesn’t hang out in your comfort zone. Take risks, meet new people, and try things that scare you. (Pro tip: If it doesn’t make you a little nervous, you’re not doing it right.)

Be a knowledge sponge. The more you know, the luckier you get. Research, learn, and network like your career depends on it. (Spoiler: It does.)

Say thank you. Gratitude isn’t just good manners—it’s good business. A simple “thank you” can turn a missed opportunity into a future win.

Fail better. Rejection isn’t the end; it’s just a plot twist. Reframe failure as feedback, and keep going. (Bonus points if you laugh about it later.)

So, here’s my challenge: Stop waiting for luck to find you. Go out and provoke it. Take the call, send the email, pitch the idea, or wear the ridiculous lucky tie. Because at the end of the day, luck isn’t something that happens to you—it’s something you create.
