May 2025 - Past, present, and future of technology transformation

Twenty years ago—back when YouTube launched at the zoo and Facebook was still exclusive to college students—Lenovo completed the acquisition of IBM’s Personal Computing Division. This was a defining milestone in our journey to becoming a global technology powerhouse.

Back in 2015, TIME called it “one of the greatest case studies on how to merge massive international enterprises into a winning firm.”

“We’ve redefined what’s possible in personal computing, introduced entirely new device categories, expanded our portfolio to include mobile phones, infrastructure, as well as services and solutions, and built a balanced global operating model that is both agile and resilient,” said our Chairman and CEO Yuanqing Yang. “These foundations remain our competitive edge, and they’re more important than ever as we enter a new era.”

Yang was actually present for the acquisition signing and continues to lead through the era of Hybrid AI as Lenovo accelerates global transformation and delivers Smarter technology for all.

Wild to think about how our phones—especially if they come equipped with moto ai—can easily out-think and outperform even the top PCs of that era.

Future decades of transformation

It’s no exaggeration to say the IBM PC acquisition changed the world of technology, but where does Lenovo stand now?

Well, this was one of our best fiscal years ever, even in the face of significant macroeconomic uncertainty. Our strategy to focus on hybrid AI has driven meaningful progress in both personal and enterprise AI.

Check out Lenovo CFO Winston Cheng on Bloomberg sharing insight on Lenovo’s performance and the wider economic landscape.

Frontiers of agentic AI

A major focus this year will be agentic AI. It may seem like another ubiquitous buzzword these days, but the technology is transforming workplaces. Art Hu, our global CIO, joined NVIDIA CIO Sony Nayyar to explore the enterprise applications—read the article on Forbes.

“Agentic AI helps us shift from managing workflows to managing intent—enabling greater scale, responsiveness, and strategic impact,” Hu said.

We’ve said it before and will (probably) say it again: We’re beyond the AI hype phase.

A culture of relentless innovation

In 2025, how can a sprawling international organization with 70,000+ people maintain a spirit of entrepreneurship? How do we cultivate curiosity and creativity on an enterprise scale?

“We’ve always associated entrepreneurship with startups,” said Luca Rossi, President of our Intelligent Devices Group. “But in truth, it’s a mindset. This mindset is defined by ownership, risk-taking, creativity, and relentless focus on solving real problems.”

Looking ahead to Lenovo’s fifth decade, Rossi called this approach Entrepreneurship 5.0: scaling boldness up, down, and across the world. Read the article for a narrative that begins in 1991 and ultimately lays out a people-first approach for the future.

Robot dogs and real cats?

Speaking of multi-decade success, let’s take a moment to look back even further… say, 969 years or so. Meet the embodied AI guardian of a millennium-old marvel.

That’s Lenovo’s Daystar Robot, autonomously monitoring the Yingxian Wooden Pagoda. This is AI reaching deep into our past to preserve and protect our heritage. And evidently also taking a moment to chill with a local cat.

Lenovo I purchased a ThinkPad X1 Carbon in February 2025 with high-end specifications (Core Ultra 7, 64GB RAM, 1TB SSD, Windows 11 Pro), investing over RM9K. From the very beginning, I’ve faced basic but frustrating issues - the camera not working, screen freezing, and graphics glitches. Despite multiple complaints, tickets, and even a motherboard replacement, the problems persist. I’ve already wasted countless hours troubleshooting during working hours with no lasting solution. This has been the most disappointing laptop purchase I’ve ever made, and based on my experience, I cannot recommend Lenovo to anyone, sorry!
