Scientists Estimate Higher Rate of New-Onset Diabetes After COVID than in the General Population

In a study published in Emerging Microbes & Infections, researchers from Weill Cornell Medicine–Qatar reviewed 35 global studies and found that 1.37% of COVID-19 patients developed new-onset diabetes, with most cases being type 2. The review included data from 4.4 million patients and identified several risk factors, including severity of infection, viral variant, existing health conditions, demographics, and vaccination status.

Low Blood Sugars (as well as high) cause Blindness in Diabetics

New research from Johns Hopkins Medicine’s Wilmer Eye Institute shows that not only high blood sugar, but also low blood sugar, can worsen diabetic eye disease. In a study on diabetic mice, researchers found that hypoglycemia triggered harmful protein activity in the retina, leading to vision-threatening damage. The team identified an experimental drug that successfully prevented retinal damage when given before low blood sugar episodes, suggesting that targeting HIF proteins could be a promising approach to prevent or treat diabetic retinopathy and support future human trials of the drug.

Online Diabetes Nutrition Education is an Effective Tool

In the U.S., about 38 million people have diabetes, with most cases being type 2. Rates are highest among older adults and certain racial and ethnic groups. Globally, 1 in 9 adults has the disease, with many undiagnosed. A new study from Barnard Medical Center tested a 12-week online plant-based nutrition program for adults with type 2 diabetes. Participants saw reductions in body weight (−3.7 kg), HbA1c (−0.6%), cholesterol, and medication use. Those new to plant-based eating saw the greatest improvements, suggesting virtual dietary support can be an effective tool in diabetes care.
