Navigating Anxiety in Uncertain Times: Befriending Your Life Amidst Financial and Political Stress

Let’s be real—anxiety has been riding shotgun for many of us lately. The whirlwind of last week’s election and the looming weight of financial challenges have left a lot of people feeling like they’re one wrong move away from unraveling. If your mind is racing, your heart feels like it’s running a marathon, and your nervous system is stuck in fight-or-flight mode, you’re not alone. These are tough times, but you don’t have to face them alone—or stuck in survival mode.

I believe in turning adversity into opportunity. This is where the Befriending Your Life framework comes in. It's not about eliminating anxiety (because, spoiler: it’s human to feel anxious sometimes!). Instead, it's about making peace with it and finding flexibility in your nervous system.

The Dance of Your Nervous System

Think of your nervous system like a rubber band. When it’s stretched too tight, even a small tug can make it snap. But what if we could increase its flexibility? That’s where nervous system regulation comes in. By practicing mindfulness, grounding techniques, and gentle self-compassion, you can help your nervous system bounce back instead of breaking under pressure.

Here’s a simple exercise to get you started:

  1. Pause and Breathe: When anxiety hits, stop what you’re doing. Take a slow, deep breath in for 4 seconds, hold it for 4 seconds, and exhale slowly for 6 seconds. Repeat this a few times.
  2. Ground Yourself: Find something solid—a chair, the floor, a table—and press your hands or feet against it. Remind yourself: I am here. I am safe.
  3. Name It to Tame It: Say out loud (or in your head), “This is anxiety. It’s my body’s way of trying to protect me.” Naming the emotion takes some of its power away and helps you shift from reaction to response.

The Connection Between Election Stress and Financial Worry

Financial insecurity and political uncertainty are a double whammy. When the world feels unpredictable, our brains tend to spiral into worst-case scenarios. But here’s the truth: worrying won’t solve the problem, but taking small, intentional steps will.

Start by asking: What is within my control right now? Maybe it’s creating a realistic budget, reaching out to a community for support, or simply giving yourself permission to rest. Remember, you don’t have to tackle everything at once. Small wins are still wins.

Grounding is one of my all time favorite tools. It is so supportive. I start every day with my bare feet on the earth. I absolutely love it! I also love what you're suggesting about pressing your hands or feet into something that can support you. It's super helpful to do something like that to transfer stress energy. Great tips!
