The Power of a Good Workplace Health Program

Transforming a Teacher's Health Journey

In the realm of holistic healthcare and the practice of exercise physiology, the success story of a dedicated school teacher stands out as an inspiring testament to the power of comprehensive well-being. Seeking a more holistic approach to her health, this teacher embarked on a transformative journey that addressed not just physical ailments but also the intricate connections between mind and body.

The teacher, facing chronic stress compounded by the loss of two close family members, knee arthritis, a labrum tear in the hip, and lower back pain from a cross-fit injury, initially found even walking to be a painful endeavour. The cumulative impact led to significant weight gain and a struggle to maintain motivation for healthy habits, with sleep quality also taking a hit.

Over the course of three telehealth and four 1 on 1 sessions provided by her workplace spanning four months, a holistic approach was employed by an exercise physiologist, putting the 'physiology' back into exercise physiology. The first steps involved addressing sleep patterns, introducing regularity, early morning sun exposure, and incorporating basic supplements under the guidance of her GP. Manual stretching and targeted exercises focused on balancing hip disparities, while a tailored combination of pre-bed yoga and Pilates techniques became integral to her routine.

A seemingly simple yet impactful addition to her daily routine was the consumption of refrigerated water every morning. This practice not only served as a morning nervous system stimulator but is well known to help regulate stress and anxiety via the regulation of norepinephrine release, contributing to a holistic approach to hydration and well-being.

Recognising the interconnectedness of mental and physical health, the teacher was connected with an Internal Family Systems (IFS) counsellor. The positive impact of this counselling was evident as she shared only positive sentiments about the experience.

In just a few sessions, the teacher's progress was remarkable. She not only rekindled her commitment to regular exercise but also found relief from hip pain, witnessed improvement in her knee condition, and experienced occasional back pain. While work and family stress still pose challenges, she is undeniably on the path to recovery.

This success story underscores the profound impact a holistic approach can have on an individual's well-being. By addressing physical ailments, sleep patterns, and mental health in tandem, this teacher's journey serves as a beacon of hope, showcasing the transformative potential of a comprehensive and integrated approach to healthcare.
