Q&A with Vince Doan- Senior Program Manager, Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA)

Q&A with Vince Doan- Senior Program Manager, Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA)

Vince Doan joined Amazon as a Senior Program Manager in September 2024 and is already managing programs for Fulfillment by Amazon. In this interview, Vince shares his experience at Amazon, detailing his most innovative work, his favorite leadership principle, and his tips for navigating the recruiting and onboarding process.

What is something you have done that you would consider innovative or pioneering at Amazon so far?

Since joining Amazon, I have been able to work on an emerging technology of Generative AI and how we can implement and find value in Customer and Seller experience. It’s been exciting and a huge learning experience being on the ground level on how the FBA business uses Gen AI and how we investigate and find meaningful seller pain points in Amazon’s vast sea of data. The challenging scenarios and the infancy of product adoption has given so many opportunities for me to grow and develop my own career path.

Since you were recently hired by Amazon, what would you recommend to someone going through the recruiting process?

I have actually helped someone go through the recruiting process at Amazon that was fortunate enough to get an offer! My biggest recommendation for someone going through the process is to focus on the Leadership Principles. Prior to interviewing and joining Amazon, the leadership principle just felt like HR marketing content. However, working with the brightest minds on my team and in broader org, everyone at Amazon really does take the Leadership Principles to heart. I experience these principles everyday in my meetings, in emails, or in leadership decision making. Amazonians have established a leadership perspective on everything they do and the ability to resonate and correlate your own professional experiences with their lens is the most impactful way to make the process sail smoothly.

What is your favorite leadership principle and why?

I would say my favorite Leadership Principle is Ownership. At Amazon, Ownership means to think long term and don’t sacrifice long-term value for short-term results. In my career experience, I always advocate for doing a job or task to further a clause, and to never say “that’s not my job”. It’s the humility that it gives when you take a job or task regardless of recognition or visibility, that shows someone’s character. This was a core principle I took as a program manager in my previous roles and has lead me to my success so far. At Amazon, I appreciated that it is a companywide principle that everyone needs to keep in mind. The ownership leadership principle doesn’t just resonate with me professionally but also personally.

What advice would you give people who passed the recruiting process and are onboarding?

Advice I would give people who passed the recruiting process and are onboarding is to be Learn and Be Curious. Amazon is such a large company and has quite the unique working culture. Compared to other companies, I spent a lot of time onboarding and am still onboarding. I definitely would focus on the writing culture and how to adapt your previous experiences of communication to the Amazonian way. Writing in general is a weak point for me so I reached out to a lot of different communities for help on writing well and writing the Amazonian way. Reaching out to different Amazonians for just general questions or to establish 1:1s is the best way to be curious during the onboarding process.

What do you do for fun/worklife balance?

I’ve been a competitive powerlifter for more than 6 years and find it crucial to my worklife balance. I found powerlifting as a great source to destress and improve my physical health as well. It taught me how to be self-confident and disciplined as I kept moving up with my personal best and feeling empowered that someone could lift almost 3-4x their weight in one lift. Powerlifting competitions were always an anxious and exciting weekend for me, especially when I started competing at the state level. I found a lot of friends and the wholesome fitness community in competitive sports again after college. Since, moving to Washington from the east coast I hope to continue competing at a high level and someday make it to the national stage.

If you too are passionate about solving big problems and leading with impact, don't wait – your dream role is just a click away.
