🚨 Secret Service Shuts Down Covert Telecom Network Near the U.N.

The U.S. Secret Service has dismantled a clandestine telecom network in the New York tri-state area containing 300+ SIM servers and nearly 100,000 SIM cards. Investigators warn the system could have overwhelmed cellular networks, jammed emergency communications, and masked encrypted channels for organized crime or even state-sponsored actors. The takedown, timed just before the U.N. General Assembly, is a sharp reminder of how fragile our telecom backbone remains under targeted attack.

Why it matters

For professionals in OSP/ISP construction, broadband deployment, and public safety, the lessons are clear:

  • Monitor and throttle abnormal SMS/signaling surges before they cripple gateways.

  • Design redundancy into PSAPs, hospitals, and emergency networks to keep them online during congestion events.

  • Police the supply chain — illicit SIM farms and jammer hardware are flooding in, and coordination with FCC/DHS is essential.

Bottom line

This was more than a law-enforcement bust — it was a stress test for our industry. Building networks today isn’t just about speed or throughput; it’s about resilience, security, and trust. Every fiber mile and every OSP/ISP build must assume that hostile load and abuse are part of the landscape.

we need to comb over those servers with a fine tooth comb. There are bigger players involved. First mergers and acquisitions dating back to first file saved.
