By Garima Chettri – CDR Writers Australia

If you're aiming to build a future in Australia without needing employer or state sponsorship, the Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189) could be your ideal route. This permanent residency visa offers unmatched flexibility but it’s driven by a points-based system that requires careful planning and smart strategies.

Here’s a simplified and practical guide to help you understand how to boost your score and stand out in the competitive invitation rounds.

🔹 What's the Minimum Requirement?

While 65 points is the baseline, real competition often starts at 85 points or more. That means the more points you can claim, the better your chance at getting invited.

🔸 Breakdown of the Points Table

1. Age (Up to 30 Points) ✅ Best score: 30 points for ages 25–32 Other age brackets vary from 25 to 15 points. If you’re 45 or older, unfortunately, you’re not eligible for this visa.

2. English Proficiency (Up to 20 Points) Your language skills can give you a solid boost:

  • Competent: 0 points

  • Proficient: 10 points

  • Superior: 20 points

3. Skilled Work Experience (Up to 20 Points) Points vary based on where and how long you've worked in your nominated field.

4. Education (Up to 20 Points) 🎓 Doctorate: 20 🎓 Bachelor/Master: 15 🎓 Recognized diploma or trade: 10

8. Regional Study: 5 Points You studied in a designated regional area of Australia.

9. Partner Skills (Up to 10 Points) Your partner can help increase your score if they meet age, skills, and English requirements or you can claim points if you're single.

10. Professional Year: 5 Points Completed a professional year in Engineering, IT, or Accounting? That’s an extra 5.
