You ever read a headline and think, "Is this journalism, or are they trying to Jedi mind-trick me into an opinion?" Well, my friends, welcome to the age of strategic storytelling, where headlines and articles don’t just inform—they manipulate.

Take this gem, for example: "Trump names a Fox News personality, a COVID mandate critic and an anti-vaccine doctor to key public health roles".

If that headline doesn’t immediately make your brain scream "controversy!" then congratulations—you’re already skeptical. But for the rest of us, let’s break down exactly how this article works overtime to make sure you feel a certain way—and why it matters.


Step 1: Headlines Are Emotional Bait

This headline doesn’t just report the news; it spins it into a narrative packed with loaded language. Consider:

  • "Fox News personality" immediately evokes either loyalty or disdain, depending on your political lens.

  • "COVID mandate critic" makes you think of defiance, possibly at the expense of public safety.

  • "Anti-vaccine doctor" (whether accurate or not) screams controversy and fringe views.

What’s missing? Any neutral or balanced framing. It’s designed to provoke, not inform.


Step 2: The Article Is a Case Study in Strategic Framing

Click on the article itself (seriously, here’s the link) and you’ll see it’s packed with selective details meant to reinforce the narrative. For example:

  • Dr. Marty Makary, a Johns Hopkins professor, is introduced primarily by his contrarian views on COVID-19. His professional credentials are mentioned, but only after discussing his "controversial" pandemic stance.

  • Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is positioned as the face of anti-vaccine activism without equal emphasis on his critiques of Big Pharma, which some experts have found valid.

  • Meanwhile, nominees like Dave Weldon and Janette Nesheiwat get less scrutiny—likely because they lack the same polarizing associations, and therefore, aren’t as click-worthy.

The result? A story that feels informative but is really a masterclass in cherry-picking and guilt-by-association tactics.


Step 3: How They Exploit Logical Fallacies

This article doesn’t just count on you to skim—it actively plays on cognitive shortcuts we all use:

  • Guilt by Association: Fox News and RFK Jr. are invoked early and often to prime distrust.

  • Strawman Arguments: Makary’s nuanced concerns about vaccine boosters for kids are flattened into "anti-vaccine doctor," a term guaranteed to polarize.
