The 7 Core Attributes of Success

Hello everybody,

I hope your week has started with clarity and focus.

Last week, I introduced the Aevitium Integrated Risk Framework. A model designed to help risk teams move from technical delivery to strategic impact. From activity to influence.

Early responses to our ongoing survey reinforce the need for this shift. So far, 32% of professionals say weak decision integration is the biggest gap when embedding risk management across operational and strategic levels. Another 31% highlight that risk is still seen primarily as assurance.

This tells us what many already feel: risk teams may be present, but they’re not always positioned to shape the decisions that matter.

Many teams meet regulatory expectations but still struggle to shape what matters. They are consulted, but not decisive. Involved, but not embedded.

This week, I’m continuing that conversation by shifting focus. Away from frameworks and structures, and toward something more personal. How we take risk. Not on paper. But in practice.

"Effective risk taking is not reckless. It is informed, collaborative, and grounded in self-awareness." — Julien Haye

This week’s article explores The 7 Core Attributes of Effective Risk Taking and the mindsets that help individuals and teams turn uncertainty into purposeful action.

  1. Clarity of purpose
  2. Anticipating what could go wrong
  3. Understanding risk tolerance
  4. Turning insight into action
  5. Staying alert and responsive
  6. Working together with purpose
  7. Learning from both success and failure

Whether you are navigating uncertainty yourself or helping others do the same, these attributes offer a practical lens for better risk taking.

Wishing you a week of alignment, insight, and momentum.

Best, Julien

Governance Gaps: How Much Budget Is Lost to Duplicate Findings?

In many organisations, risk, audit, compliance and the first line report the same issues but frame them differently. Our latest poll shows that 30% of respondents believe over 20% of their remediation budget is spent fixing the same problems more than once.

📍 30% say they spend over 20% of their budget on duplicate issues

📍 27% estimate the cost between 10–20%

📍 26% report spending less than 10%

📍 18% are unsure, signalling limited visibility over remediation spending

What This Tells Us

This is far more than just a cost issue. It reflects deeper gaps in role clarity and cross-functional alignment. When similar issues are picked up by multiple teams but tackled in isolation, the result is wasted effort, disjointed fixes and a lack of ownership.

Governance works when teams operate with shared visibility, common definitions and coordinated accountability. Without that, duplication becomes a structural risk.

A pilot diagnostic is now in development to help teams identify where duplication happens and how to fix it. Consultations are now underway with CROs across sectors to select a handful of organisations for early participation. If you want to reduce remediation waste and align your lines of defence, this is your opportunity to get involved.

📊 Ongoing Poll: Which Line Feels Most Disconnected in Governance?

Middle managers are the cultural carriers of any organisation. They’re close to where risk emerges but far from where decisions are made. Our latest poll shows that 45% of respondents believe lack of leadership backing is the biggest barrier to escalation.

Our latest poll revealed a striking signal:

66% of respondents said the biggest cultural risks in their organisation are silence in meetings and lack of challenge to the status quo.

These are early warnings of misalignment, poor escalation, and blind spots in governance. And they consistently show up across the 3 Lines.

The Risk Within addresses these challenges head-on, with a practical, evidence-based look at how internal dynamics quietly shape governance, decision-making, and long-term resilience.

📖 What You’ll Take Away:

  • How silence and conformity hide critical risks
  • Why psychological safety is essential for accountability and challenge
  • What leadership can do to dismantle fear-driven behaviour
  • Examples of how organisations uncovered hidden risks—and what they did next

🗳️ Ongoing poll:

This week, we’re exploring what makes middle managers hesitate to escalate. Early responses suggest that perceived lack of leadership backing is part of the story.

If you’ve ever sensed risk isn’t just about systems, but also about people not speaking up; you’re not alone. This book is for you.
