What Does It Really Mean to Live Intentionally?
Have you ever heard someone use the term "live intentionally"?
Maybe you came across it in a book, a podcast, or a conversation. Maybe you even use it yourself.
When I first heard it, I had to pause and think. The phrase sounded compelling and useful, but what did it actually mean? Was it just a trendy self-help phrase? Or was there something deeper, something life-changing, maybe even transcendent? Whoah!!
Let’s break it down: two words that sound simple, but together form the foundation of a better life: Living. Intentionally.
Living doesn’t just mean breathing or existing. It means creating a way of life, actively shaping how you spend your time, energy, and attention.
Intentionally means having a purpose in mind. A goal. A desired outcome. You intend to stay healthy. You intend to grow your career and become an executive. You intend to spend more time with your family. It starts by knowing what you want for your day, for your week, for the upcoming year, and most importantly, for your life.
Once you define that, intentional living becomes both proactive and reactive:
Proactively, you plan your actions around your intentions. You schedule your time with intent. You choose habits, goals, and routines that move you closer to the life you want. Ideally, a life vision you've created and a future life you've defined.
Reactively, you start filtering the world. You say “yes” or “no” to people, projects, distractions, and demands based on how well they align with your priorities, goals and life vision.
IMPORTANT: Every minute of the day, you're making decisions, consciously or not, about where to place your focus. You may not always realize it, but your attention is constantly being directed. Intentional living means directing it on purpose.
Every decision becomes a vote, for the life you want, or the life you’ll drift into by default.
Over time, your mind starts to rewire itself. You make better decisions, not just from willpower, but from clarity. Because you told your mind what matters. You gave it direction. Gut feelings are real! And now driven by what's aligned with your values, your goals, and the life you want.
That’s intentional living: A life built on purpose, not pressure. A life that reflects your values, your vision, and your definition of success.
It doesn’t happen overnight. But when your choices start aligning with your goals and values, even in the little things, you start to feel it:
This is your life. The one you designed.
So pause and ask yourself: Are you living today with intention, or just reacting to what shows up?
Start with one area of your life. Define your intention. Start your life design. And let your actions follow.
