What is Next in the Travel Industry?

What is Next in the Travel Industry?

Inspired by an interview with Shannon Stowell, the CEO of the Adventure Travel Trade Association, in Forbes.

And I love to share my main takeaways and my next steps:

- the recovery in the travel industry depends on the recovery/infection clusters;

- travel in small groups or SLOW travel;

- adventure travel is the first to recover due to the element of staying in nature, maintaining an active, healthy style and no fear of staying in crowded places;

- domestic travel will be first to recover;

- there is an opportunity to rebuild the industry differently;

- overall travel arrivals will decline until the industry becomes more climatically and socially responsible;

- and to top it off with my favourite: Travel is a PRIVILEGE and not a right!

That being said, I've never seen Switzerland so sunny and the weather has been so generous to us! I hope we will re-start travel more responsibly, reconsidering the frequency and selected means of travel (e.g. fewer times flying, consider that shopping tours by plane are somehow immoral). Indeed, we need a shift in our collective mindset to succeed together.

GAME CHANGERS and local organisations with INFLUENCER POWER might catalyse those evolvements.

What is your response to this crisis? Mine was to initiate #microgapswitzerland, to help promote the idea that we need to reduce overconsumption and tame our Ego when it tells us that we need to be physically present at every place or event.

While sharing your beautiful neighbourhood here in Switzerland, you inspire others to re-discover the places where we are rooted and to eliminate the monotonous element of routine. By doing so, we encourage each other to prioritise domestic travel and to share your every-day hidden gems with others.

Switzerland is one of the most fantastic celebrity destinations, with the most incredible variety I have ever been, and Iʼm so honoured to call it my home. Moreover, our hospitality industry will appreciate it after the lockdown is lifted.

In closing, I love to invoke a renowned phrase of Siddartha, by Hermann Hesse: "You, Venerable One, are perhaps indeed a seeker, for, striving to reach your goal, you overlook many things that lie close before your eyes."

Great summary, Natallia! Such a turbulent time for the industry and as you indicate, something good will come out of it. Appreciation of the local gems with #microgapswitzerland and being even more conscious about our planet. I also wonder if travelling by car to neighbouring countries will grow more. We are lucky in Switzerland to have fantastic neighbourhoods. Wearing my HR and future of work hat I am also wondering what will happen to all the talent in the industry that had to be laid off. What are some of the skills that could be easily transferred to other industries? How the Travel Profis are reinventing themselves and their roles? Thoughts appreciated!
