Who say's NO to A Network Show?
In the critically acclaimed show "Hacks" the main character has to wait years to finally get her own own late night talk show. Yesterday, our USC Gould School of Law "Dealmaking in the Entertainment Industry" class was able to visit the Paramount Television Studios set of "After Midnight" and get a first hand look at how TV shows are made.
In the real world, comedian Taylor Tomlinson, who is 31 years of age, got her show on CBS called "After Midnight" and chose to say no after only 2 seasons. The headline states that the show was "canceled" after 2 seasons, but who canceled who?
It appears that the comedian Taylor Tomlinson is the one who made the call to walk away and take her stand up show on the road according to the USA Today article:
"Hosting 'After Midnight' has genuinely been the experience of a lifetime, and I'll be forever grateful for the opportunity to be part of this incredible journey," Tomlinson said in a statement. "Though it was an extremely tough decision, I knew I had to return to my first passion and return to stand-up touring full-time. I appreciate CBS, Stephen Colbert, the producers, and the entire 'After Midnight' staff and crew for all the love, support, and unforgettable memories."
How will this work out?
Time will tell, but it sure hurts to see a historic show and moment in time wither away. It would be refreshing to have a real role model to look up to, but after next week, the only real life women led late night show will be history. At least for now.
Shout out to The Late Show with Stephen Colbert for producing this power house show and to all who worked on it for the past 2 years. One of the highlights of the show was the comedian warm up "Hype Boi" Percy Rusty and hopefully we will see him performing again soon.
For now, 150 or so jobs are gone and there is a hole in our hearts because this women led production will be done forever.
What are the lessons to be learned here?

2moAt least the first was a Tomlinson! I have no idea about Taylor’s decision. I have seen many leave show business because it just doesn’t pay enough. The top few make all the money while even people with recurring roles don’t even make 1/2 of the poverty level for this area. It’s messed up. It is also messed up when the 5 wealthiest people in the country control more wealth than 50% of the population of this country. 60’s Love has become 21st century greed. imo
