Why Insulin Resistance Could Be the Missing Piece for You

I spent a long time struggling with my weight, feeling like my body just wasn’t cooperating. I was diagnosed with an autoimmune condition at 23, but it wasn’t until after my twins were born that things started to shift. I began experiencing hot flushes and that’s when it hit me—something wasn’t right. That was my wake-up call, and I realized I needed to take my health seriously.

I started to pay attention to what I was eating and how I was moving, but it wasn't easy. I had always been overweight, and the combination of hormonal changes, stress, and not truly understanding what my body needed led me down a path I didn’t even realize I was on—insulin resistance.

What Is Insulin Resistance?

Insulin resistance occurs when your body's cells become less responsive to insulin, the hormone that helps regulate blood sugar. As a result, your body needs more insulin to keep your blood sugar levels in check. Over time, this can lead to higher insulin levels in the bloodstream, causing a cascade of issues like weight gain, hormonal imbalances, fatigue, and even skin problems.

If you’ve been struggling with weight gain despite eating well, feeling constantly tired, or dealing with skin breakouts, you might be experiencing insulin resistance. Insulin resistance doesn’t just affect blood sugar; it impacts your hormones, energy levels, and gut health as well.

What Causes Insulin Resistance?

While insulin resistance can lead to hormonal imbalances, it’s important to understand that certain factors, like perimenopause, diet, stress, and more, can also cause or contribute to insulin resistance, especially as we get older.

Here’s a breakdown of what can trigger or worsen insulin resistance:

  1. Poor Diet: A diet high in refined sugars, processed foods, and carbohydrates can overwhelm your body’s ability to manage blood sugar levels. These foods cause rapid spikes in insulin, leading to overproduction and eventually insulin resistance. If your diet is consistently high in these foods, your cells become less responsive to insulin, causing your body to store excess fat, especially around the abdomen.
  2. Perimenopause: During perimenopause, hormonal fluctuations can directly impact insulin sensitivity. As estrogen levels drop, insulin resistance can increase, making it harder for your body to use glucose efficiently. This is why many women experience weight gain, especially in the abdominal area, during this phase of life.
  3. Poor Muscle Mass: Muscle mass is crucial for maintaining insulin sensitivity. The more muscle you have, the more glucose your body can use for energy. When muscle mass declines, as it often does with aging, insulin resistance can worsen. Regular strength training can help maintain muscle mass and improve insulin sensitivity.
  4. Lack of Sleep: Sleep deprivation is a significant factor in insulin resistance. Studies have shown that not getting enough sleep can cause your body’s insulin response to weaken, leading to higher blood sugar levels and a greater risk of developing insulin resistance over time. Quality sleep is essential for regulating hormones, including insulin.
  5. Stress: Chronic stress leads to elevated cortisol levels, the stress hormone. While cortisol is necessary for responding to short-term stress, prolonged high levels of cortisol can interfere with insulin function, contributing to insulin resistance. Stress also often leads to poor eating habits, less exercise, and poor sleep—further exacerbating the problem.

How Insulin Resistance Affects Your Body

If you’ve been struggling with weight gain, fatigue, or other symptoms, it could be related to insulin resistance. Here's how it impacts your body:

  • Fatigue: With insulin resistance, your body struggles to use glucose efficiently, leaving you feeling tired and sluggish throughout the day. It’s like running on empty, no matter how much coffee you drink.
  • Weight Gain: High insulin levels encourage your body to store fat, particularly around the waist. This can be especially frustrating when you're doing all the "right" things but still seeing weight creep up.
  • Hormonal Imbalances: Insulin resistance can affect other hormones, leading to symptoms like acne, mood swings, and irregular periods. It’s one of the reasons why women in their 40s often struggle with things like acne, fatigue, or mood swings.
  • Gut Health: Insulin resistance is also linked to gut dysbiosis—the imbalance of good and bad bacteria in your digestive system. This can cause bloating, indigestion, or other digestive issues that make you feel even more out of sync.

How We Can Work Together

If any of this sounds familiar, you're not alone. Insulin resistance is more common than we realize, especially for women in their 40s dealing with stress, hormonal changes, and a busy lifestyle. But the good news is, you don’t have to suffer in silence or just accept it as “getting older.”

I work with doctors to offer blood biomarker testing and the most advanced gut microbiome testing in Asia, which can help uncover hidden imbalances in your gut and metabolism that are contributing to your symptoms. These tests not only measure your gut health but also track your metabolic markers, allowing us to identify early signs of insulin resistance, digestive issues, and other underlying conditions that might be affecting your health.

With the information from these tests, we can create a personalized plan that addresses the root causes of your health concerns, including diet, exercise, stress management, and lifestyle changes. This approach is comprehensive, allowing us to dig deep into your body’s needs and create a sustainable plan for you to feel your best.
