Is it worth it? The late-night habit I had to break.

💡 WELLTHY PRINCIPLE:

Late Night Eating Comes at a Cost

For years, I had a nighttime ritual I loved.

After a long day of work, parenting, and showing up for everyone else, I’d settle in with two of my favorite things:

  • Late-night TV

  • A big bowl of cereal (sometimes two)

I wasn’t overweight. I exercised. I knew how to “eat healthy.” But I also knew deep down that it wasn’t harmless.

I had read the research:

  • Melatonin blocks insulin at night, making it harder to manage blood sugar

  • Late meals raise your heart rate and body temperature, reducing deep sleep

  • Poor sleep throws off hunger hormones and cravings the next day

  • Over time, this loop increases belly fat, inflammation, and risk for metabolic disease

Still, I told myself: “It’s my thing. It helps me unwind. I deserve it.”

Until one day, the science became personal. I was diagnosed with pre-diabetes.

And suddenly, knowing the research wasn’t enough. I had to live it.

🧰 WELLTHY PRACTICE:

Set a Kitchen Curfew

Here’s the shift that changed everything for me (and now, for many of my clients):

I started closing the kitchen by 8pm.

Not always perfectly. But consistently enough that:

  • I slept deeper

  • I woke up less bloated and more clear-headed

  • I had fewer cravings and more energy

  • My blood sugar improved

  • And most importantly, I got my power back

Think "rhythm," not "restriction." Your body runs on a clock. When you eat late, you’re going against it.

And the cost shows up the next morning in your cravings, your sleep, your energy, and eventually…your labs.

Want to start small? Here’s how:

  1. Pick a kitchen curfew time that works for you (ideally before 8pm)

  2. Set a reminder 30 minutes before to wrap up your last bite

  3. Give yourself a new end-of-day reward, like tea, a walk, a stretch, or a bath.

❓ASK STEVYN:

Q: Is it ok to ever eat after 8pm?

A: Absolutely. Remember, it's a rhythm (not a rule).

There are nights when you’re at a dinner party, traveling, or just need a snack. It's not failure. It's life.

The goal is consistency, not perfection.

What I suggest is:

✅ Make earlier eating your default

✅ Make late-night eating a conscious choice

Because when you understand the cost, you can make a better decision about the comfort.

Wow pre-diabetes?! I bet so many would classify as that. I try not eat past 6 which is tough but helpful for my early 9pm bedtime 🙂

I love the realistic, practical piece at the end, Stevyn. There are times when it just won't fit, but one day doesn't define us.
