Are You Making This Passive Mistake in Your Job Search?
In today’s edition, we offer tips to make your job search easier and faster.
Insights from the Jobscan Blog
Make sure your resume and LinkedIn tell the same story
They don’t need to match word for word, but they do need to align. If your resume says one thing and your LinkedIn says another, it can raise red flags. Make sure both tell the same career story, even if the wording is slightly different.
Use your personal story to stand out
You are truly unique. No one else has your exact career path, perspective, or lessons learned. Don’t downplay what sets you apart. Embrace what makes your journey different. It’s your edge in a world of cookie-cutter applicants.
Match your resume to the job description
Don’t send the same resume to every job. Tailor it by using the exact words and phrases from the job description. Recruiters search applicant tracking systems (ATS) the same way you search Google. They use keywords. Make sure those keywords are on your resume so it’s easy to find.
Use positive, confident language
Words matter, especially in an interview. Instead of saying “I think,” “I guess,” or “Maybe I could…,” use phrases like “I’m excited about…,” “I’m confident that…,” or “I’d love the opportunity to…” These small shifts can help you sound more self-assured and enthusiastic.
Add these 3 things to your LinkedIn headline
Your headline is one of the first things people see on your profile. Make it count by including three essentials: your job title, your top skills, and the value you bring. This helps employers instantly know who you are, what you do best, and how you can help them succeed.
Some Thoughts Before You Go…
When I was applying for jobs, I often had this quiet thought in the back of my head:
“I think I’m a good fit for this role… but I’m not sure. The recruiter knows better than me. I’ll just send in my resume and let them figure it out.”
Sound familiar?
It’s a common mindset, and I get it.
Job descriptions can be overwhelming or vague, and it’s easy to second-guess your experience.
But hoping someone else sees your value is a losing strategy.
Recruiters are inundated with resumes. They don’t have time to connect the dots for you.
You have to do it for them.
Your application needs to deliver one clear message: “I’m the solution to your problem.”
Most job seekers take a passive approach.
The ones who stand out are the ones who actively show why they’re the right choice.
So don’t just apply. Convince.
That’s it for this edition. I hope these tips have sparked some new ideas for your job search.
See you next week!
