Simplify Overwhelming Project Data by
Putting it in Context
Combining multiple disciplines into a single system can
raise the complexity to a level where coordination becomes
almost impossible. Tool flows that connect effectively within
individual design domains seldom talk to each other outside
of their domain. A commonly proposed solution is the PLM
“centralize all your data and we will take care of it” approach,
but this is not appropriate or effective for the disparate
processes, cycle times, and data types of many specialized
disciplines.
What is needed is a true Systems Engineering approach
to integration, one that manages relationships between
tools throughout design disciplines; coordinate changes,
dependencies, and impacts; and integrates with current
tools and flows.
Context SDM satisfies these requirements, providing all
participants in the design flow access to extensive resources
within their preferred environment. When an issue occurs,
the user can assign responsibility, acknowledge delegation,
and satisfy requirements and dependencies throughout the
typical design flow simply by linking to that particular issue
as it occurs. Changes are immediately accessible and status
is shared in real time.
Link as You Think
Context capabilities link the “outside in” world with the
“inside out” world so things like standards, specifications,
business process models, etc., link with analysis, detail
designs, and product requirements, keeping all aspects of a
design in context with each other. This makes the designer’s
daily tasks easier and supports better product management
without requiring a change in methodology.
All tool-created data remains in the originating environment
while sharing useful information as required and relevant to
team members.
Design Management Solutions
Context SDM elevates the efficiency and economy of the
development process without demanding disruptive change.
• Data managed in original storage/CM system
• Integration in design tools delivers dependency
information directly to the users
• Drag-and-drop associations automate the tasks
• Full cross-discipline management and automation
• Workflow services guide and manage the process
• Flexible views and reports access status rapidly
• Built-in automation accelerates repetitive steps
Context SDM Architecture
Context SDM is built around a server architecture, which is
the focal point and organizing base for all information. It
holds and manages links between design and project items,
building a complete history as events occur.
Project managers, reviewers, and any other product data
clients have interactive access to that information through
the views provided by the Context SDM product manager
web interface. These views include queries, dashboards, and
reports. Original data remains with the originating tools and
repositories.
Features are programmable to specific uses cases or needs
through an underlying meta-model and associated actions,
dependencies, roles, vocabulary, etc. that are a key part of
the flexibility of the Context architecture. The user doesn’t
need to know which of all the other tools holds the needed
data, only how to get to it or if it is related to the task at hand.
Examples of Use Cases
Aerospace Systems Engineering
Users: Systems engineers need to create system-level models
from requirements. Developers need to create schematics
for printed-circuit boards and other implementation
technologies.
Goal: Achieve digital continuity from systems engineering
to the implementation disciplined. Be able to manage, track,
and support change in that process.
Benefits from Context SDM: System modeling. Requirements
and standards integration. Connections to implementation
disciplines.
Critical Safety Analysis
Users: Requirements, system, and safety analysis engineers
need to perform design definition, fault modeling, and fault
tree analysis.
Goal: Create, model, and execute fault behavior. Execute fault
analysis in the context of the requirements. Create standards-
driven workflow that shows decomposition of functions and
potential failures.
Benefits from Context SDM: Standards such as ARP 4754A,
ARP 4761, and related specifications require a well-linked flow
and traceable actions and results such as that provided by
Context SDM.
Automotive Electronics Development
Users: System designers and software developers need to
implement development flow that complies to standards.
Goal: Satisfy AUTOSAR and/or ISO26262 requirements.
Benefits from Context SDM: System-level modeling captures
required features for development. Change and the impact
of change is integrated into the design flow. Downstream
connectivity captured and maintained. Standards-compliant
audit trail provided in report format.
Industry Standard Collaboration Services
Context SDM leverages industry-leading development and
implementation of a service-based, tool-to-tool collaboration
platformprovidedbyOpenServicesforLifecycleCollaboration
(OSLC). Mentor Graphics is a founding member of OSLC.
OSLC is built upon the same technology as HTTP, which
enables a remote view of information. It operates in the same
way as a Web browser-based search query. Instead of copying
all queried information back to the user to handle, it provides a
view, or a link to, the results. Using this same concept, domain-
specific engineering tools can easily be linked together.
Context SDM makes the user’s native environment OSLC-
enabled, which allows the user to focus on the task at hand.
OSLC-enabled tools are able to share essential information,
at selectable levels of detail. Options are provided by the
standard to allow selection of the relevant services for each
given need, such as:
• Query, or search, to access data catalogs or identified
items
• Previews, delivering requested content in the format most
useful to the local environment
• Create, edit, or other operations as relevant to the process
and tool providing the service
Satisfying Safety Standards
Today’s safety-critical standards are forcing changes in
accepted processes. Information required for compliance
documents can be hard to find using manual processes.
Context SDM tracks changes as they occur, retaining a
history of them, which helps to document the actual process
followed. By tracing all dependencies and requirements
through the entire development cycle, Context SDM provides
immediate visual analytics that can be used as an audit trail,
providing easier support of domain-specific safety standards.
And, it supports standards compliance needs by automating
reporting checks that can be used to satisfy safety standards.
And, it supports standards compliance needs by automating
reporting checks that can be used to satisfy safety standards,
such as ARP4754A/4761, DO-178b/c, ISO26262, AUTOSAR, etc.
