Why Are We Talking
The simple goal of this presentation is to help IT staff make more informed decisions
about the how and why of modernizing ITs ability to deliver services.

-- Own Our Own Data Center?
Why Would Anyone Do That, CIOs Ask
"With the right outsourcing partner you can
leverage scale and free up your team from
routine operations. The key is, however, to find
the right partner.”
—Michael Hanken, VP of IT at Multiquip
“[We made the decision] to get out of the data
center business… It is one of those areas that
is deceptively complex filled with trial and
tribulation.”
—Will Weider, CIO at Ministry Health Care
“While you don't always have to own the data
center, what does matter is knowin where your
data is and understanding the controls around
securing it and the infrastructure it runs on.”
—Matthew Oakley Group, Head of IT at Schroders

Current State of IT – In the Process of Cloud Adoption
⦿ What drivers are forcing you to consider cloud of any kind?
⦿ How does cloud adoption affect the organization & expectations of IT?
⦿ What are the biggest challenges to making an effective move to being
more innovating through cloud use?
7

Current State of IT – In the Process of Cloud Adoption
⦿ We all know what the basic demand drivers are for cloud adoption, but in
the end it boils down to the opportunity to:
8
▶ Reduce the footprint of snowflake infrastructure
▶ Builds & data center sprawl
▶ Drive new business models
▶ Expand geographies
▶ Improve speed of delivery
▶ Have an ability to manage to scale and elasticity challenges more efficiently
▶ Enable faster integration of new (partners, acquisitions, etc.)

Current State of IT – In the Process of Cloud Adoption
⦿ Challenges:
9
© Apcera 2017
Legacy Means
⦿ The application is fairly inflexible in where it lives
⦿ The application is needed, but it’s not cloud native
⦿ Requires more care and feeding than an application in a cloud environment
⦿ Has limited automation to support it
10
© Apcera 2017
Burdened With the Long Tail of Legacy
⦿ Legacy
▶ Process
▶ Tooling
▶ Infrastructure
▶ Applications
⦿ How do we leverage what we have (skills, hardware, space) at the same time we build the
future?
11
© Apcera 2017
Struggling to Provide Innovation
⦿ Constrained Skills & Resources
▶ You must find a force multiplier
⦿ With clearly defined objectives for future state and a few POC examples to point to –
convince the business to support reduced support in some areas
⦿ Get away from selling faster this or bigger that, move on to selling the story of improved
outcomes for the business
12

What is a Platform?
⦿ There are many ”platforms” hardware and software; however, for the sake of this
discussion, I’m referring to a platform as described below:
A platform is a software solution set that supports a production ready
ability to deploy, manage, secure and govern enterprise applications with
a high level of automation.
13
© Apcera 2017
Why a Platform Approach is Needed
14
© Apcera 2017
Platform Characteristics
⦿ Repeatability – You aren’t risking the release of snowflakes each time you deploy.
⦿ Infrastructure – The ability to leverage capacity in almost any infrastructure
configuration (public cloud, private cloud, bare metal, all).
⦿ Auditability – The capability to quickly and accurately determine the origin of
changes or actions.
⦿ Security – Inherit ability to provide security through some form of policy
framework and definition set that is shared across environments.
⦿ Capacity – Is a force multiplier of your IT staff and associated resources.
15
© Apcera 2017
Customer Intimacy
Everyone wants it, but what could it mean for IT shops?
16
© Apcera 2017
A DevOps Culture & Org Model is Required
⦿ Without DevOps delivery of new infrastructure resources will be snowflake and human
intervention oriented
17
© Apcera 2017
Challenges to Making a Move
⦿ Skills, budget and general resource availability above what’s needed to keep the lights
on
⦿ Understanding of what can or can’t be done in a move to adopt cloud
⦿ Value and risk assumptions
⦿ Who should you look to?
⦿ Managed services
⦿ Cloud provider
⦿ Software partners
⦿ All of the Above
18
© Apcera 2017
Chasing Bright Shiny Objects
⦿ There are more tools and solutions coming to market every day than ever before
⦿ How do you decide what to use or lose?
▶ Staffing
▶ Corporate Culture
▶ Industry Vertical
▶ Scale of any given environment
▶ Time to value
▶ Risk of on-going support
▶ Snowflake implementations across IT teams and even between developers
▶ Lock in to a specific provider
19
© Apcera 2017
Why Things Work for Google or Facebook
What works for Google or Facebook likely won’t work for your business, at least not in the
same implementation method
▶ Scale – Small improvements in efficiency gain major value
▶ Skills and staffing levels – Much higher cost and generally considered core to product &
service delivery
▶ Owning the technology - Regardless of people cost is competitive advantage
▶ Implementation strategy – How you get there vs. what you actually need
20
© Apcera 2017
Conclusion & Takeaways
⦿ We’re not likely to solve the the human resource issue in IT anytime soon
⦿ Time-to-Value of IT solutions must be dramatically improved
⦿ The expectations of your business is that IT can respond in real-time to new
opportunity
⦿ The consumer of your service may end up being actual consumers (what does that
mean for you)
⦿ Risk mitigation, security, and performance are all a given
⦿ Scale & elasticity are assumed
