What is the Needs Mapper?
The Needs Mapper gauges family goals
such as helping children with homework,
improving behavior, or post-secondary
planning. In doing so, the tool aims to
establish a measurable baseline for
students and families that can easily be
benchmarked against over time. Fami-
lies also have the option to indicate their
interest in ongoing engagement with the
school or service providers.
Wraparound Services
The 2014-15 school year was year two
of piloting the RyeCatcher tool in the
Achievement School District (ASD). In
working with ASD, the need for a tool to
capture all support services a student
may require was determined. The solu-
tion developed into the Needs Mapper
tool, which was created to support a
wraparound approach as practiced in
ASD.
A school-based wraparound strategy
promotes student academic achieve-
ment by developing, securing and
coordinating support that targets the
student’s non-academic barriers to
learning.
“Leveraging wraparound to improve edu-
cational outcomes is not only supported
by practitioner experience, but is also
rooted in a research base that clearly
indicates that academic achievement
is affected by numerous factors outside
the academic domain, many of which
are poverty related. More specifically,
a recent study on the impact of wrap-
around services found that wraparound
can contribute to student academic
progress as measured by decreases in
grade retention and increases in atten-
dance, math achievement, and reading
and ELA achievement.” 2.
The Needs Mapper
Wraparound Services
“Wraparound services
represent an emerging
field of practice focused
on addressing persistent
disparities in educational
achievement and
attainment.” 2.
RyeCatcher’s Needs Mapper is a tool used to identify areas
in which a student and their family needs support. The Needs
Mapper is composed of 13 questions that assess student
development as it relates to academics, social skills, emotional
health, behavior, and wellness.

A major factor in evaluating a student’s
needs is asking the right questions in the
right context during student intake. With
input from W. Ansel Sanders, (TITLE,
ORG) Agape, Communities in Schools,
and student support team members, Rye-
Catcher developed several intake inter-
view questions. In consulting with these
subject matter experts and studying other
successful programs, several key factors
were determined.
Design & Development
With key factors in mind, RyeCatcher
moved into the design and software
engineering phase. Accounting for ease-
of-use, readability and on-screen direc-
tion, the interface began to take shape in
a simple and clear format. Content was
reviewed for reading comprehension, pos-
sible interpretation error, and architecture
to minimize influence from one response
to the next.

Launch
The Needs Mapper was developed
in about one month, and launched on
Achievement School District’s registration
day, July 29, 2014. RyeCatcher’s launch
was a success resulting in over 350
submissions on registration day. Current-
ly, over 600 families have completed the
survey.
Data Collection
Mapper results are collected and aggre-
gated into csv format. Currently, users
download and analyze data to identify
trends and insights manually.
Adaptation
Based on varying levels of family reading
abilities and technical accessibility during
the rollout period, the tool was adapted to
also function as an interview guide. This
later evolved into a single-page paper
survey.
This summer, the tool will undergo refine-
ment in both content and implementation
based on feedback and insights gained in
the first year of use.
Circle one for each of the following questions.

What We Learned
One year in use has surfaced many in-
sights for RyeCatcher. Primary insights
include:
• Capturing information from families is
critical
• Multiple formats are necessary to pro-
vide equitable experience for families
• Name and other key data to play
larger role in form design
• Question order and customization
options will boost usage
• Displaying instant results will align
more closely with user expectations-
parent and family data dashboard
needed
• Take “Action first” approach: what am
I, the parent, going to get out of this?
Next Steps
For the 2015-16 school year, the survey
will be widely distributed, expanding
use into ## schools. RyeCatcher plans
to work with the schools to set goals
for completion rates, and is sending
Interns and Implementation Coaches
into the field to help collect Mapper
data. Additionally, the team will develop
a data dashboard to make reports and
visualizations accessible immediately
for all end-users.
Next steps include:
• Creating multiple versions of the tool
including SMS, mobile, and print
• Engaging Sociolinguistic to review
order and sequence of questions
• Exploring self-service for onboarding
new schools
• Developing a parent-only version that
can be shared with schools
The Needs Mapper
Moving Forward
“Being able to customize
the Needs Mapper tool
becomes even more
important when we see
the varied circumstances
in which families come to
us. Whether it’s adjusting
for readability, literacy,
technical accessibility or
even question order, the
tool must be flexible to
maximize accuracy of the
results.” -Ansel(?)
