Calculation of balanced diet for

5. Distribute total decided between meals

 The above mentioned information will help decide the kind
of diet to be planned.
1. Identify the individual & his/her
specific characteristics

 The background information of income, religion & region of
residing will decide the kind of foods to be included in the
plan.
 The age & sex play very imp. Role in deciding numbers if
calories & protein to be given.
 The diet must suit the pocket of person.
 Religion is very imp. Factor & should not be ignored while
planning the diet.

 Generally, if the diet contains required amount of
energy & protein as per RDI’s it provide sufficient
amounts of other nutrient as well.
 Careful selection of foods with inclusion of rich
sources of vitamins & minerals will help meet the
needs.
2. Consult recommended dietary
intake for energy & protein

 The selection of specific food will depend on the
income, personal preferences.
 The food should be selected from each food group
mentioned earlier.
 The amount & selection of foods should be done
carefully so as to meet the requirements of energy &
protein.
3. Decide total amount of specific
food groups

 Meal frequency in influenced by various factors such as
income, occupation, school timing etc.
 People of more affluent society have more meals.
 Traditionally most regions in India follow three to five meal
pattern
 3 meal pattern ( Breakfast, lunch, dinner).
 2 small meals ( Mid morning & late afternoon)
4. Decide on number of meals to be
consumed

 The total amount of foods from each food groups
should be distributed over day’s meal.
5. Distribute total decided between
meals

 In other words plan the menu.
 The dishes to be included from each food group must
be decided.
 This means selecting the specific foods for particular
dish or meal.
6. Decide the items & their amounts
within each group for each meal

 In step 6 the menu was planned.
 In this step we must check whether all the food items
decided in step 3 are included or not.
7. Check day’s diet for inclusion of
each food group & amount decided
