- 2. 1. Drug Abuse in Malaysia 1. The National Anti-Drug Agency has recorded the number of drug addicts nationwide from 2014 until September 2018 at 133,684, which is 0.40 per cent of the country’s population. 2. The youngest drug abuser on record is a 7-year old child (Akhbar Satar, D.S., 2019). 3.It is estimated that currently, Malaysia suffers 70 new drug addicts daily, out of the total number of reported cases, 3,046 were new addicts and 682 were repeat offenders. 4. Identified drug abusers are sent for compulsory rehabilitation and treatment programs for two years, as mandated by the Malaysian law. 133,684 0.4% Background Study
- 3. Background Study 2. Children of addicted parents 1. In homes where one or more adults abuse alcohol or drugs, children are approximately twice as likely to develop addictive disorders themselves, according to Current Drug Abuse Reviews (American Addiction Centers., n.d.). 2. In a healthy parent-child relationship, the parent takes on the role of the caregiver, however in parent-child relationships that involve substance abuse, these roles are often reversed, and the child assumes the role of the caregiver.

- 5. Background Study 3. Social stigma against addicts 1. Social stigma against addicts and alcoholics discourages both parents and children from reaching out for help (American Addiction Centers, n.d.) 2. Social bias against addiction leads to a “conspiracy of silence,” in which society ignores the needs of young victims of abuse and neglect. 3. Many of the kids who grow up in households affected by addiction continue to suffer poor mental and physical health as adults (American Addiction Centers., n.d.).
- 6. Issue 1. Research has shown that from 2015 to 2017, 2,169 students from primary schools to universities were involved in drug abuse (Esmail, A., 2019) 2. In the families that where one or more adults abuse drugs, parenting become unreliable, inconsistent, and unpredictable. There never is a sense of safety and consistency, allowing children to thrive (Lancer, D., 2018) 3. The emotional and mental stress of having to care for themselves and for intoxicated parents can harm a child’s brain development (American Addiction Centers, n.d.)
- 7. Issue 4. There are news reported that a mother was found to have used her two-month-old baby for money to satisfy her drug addiction (Halid, S., 2018) 5. In just three months, the department had rescued 11 children, aged between 2 months and 13 years, who were neglected by their drug addict parents. 6. The children did not get the opportunity to go to school and being cared for by their relatives. 7. There are also children as young as seven are getting caught up in the web of addiction because of their drug-using parents (Josh, E., 2016)
- 8. Research Question 1 What are the most effective architecture strategies for children of addicted parents to engage with the society? Research Question 2 How do architecture help to increase public involvement in social service programs?
- 9. Aim The proposal aim to address the issue of children of addicted parents in Malaysia which have limited concern of public.By create a nurturing and caring environment for them and to enable them to live a life with a better tomorrow at the same time with the helps and contributions from the communities and society. Objective I) To provide spaces and convenient environment for children of addicted parents to engage with the society by using architecture design strategies. III)To apply architecture strategies that help to increase public involvement in social service programs.

Project This proposed project is targeting to provide accommodation, counselling, education and treatment to the children of addicted parents and it also a community recreation centre, provide social spaces and sports activities to the communities. A home for the children that provide accommodation, counselling, education and treatment. A community reccreation centre that provide social spaces and sports activities to the communities. AND

- 12. Program 1. Nature-based therapy • An intervention that initiates a therapeutic process aimed at recovery for a specific patient group where the NBT actively involves a specially designed or chosen nature setting (Annerstedt and Wahrborg, 2011 and Corazon et al., 2010) • Have positive health effects on people with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

Urban Farming and green kitchen • Urban farming aims to teach the children how to grow and harvest their own food could help kids improve their social skills through teamwork, encourage self- esteem, and promote healthy lifestyles • Provide job opportunities for the drug addict that having treatment in the center. • Green kitchen will sell dishes by using the foods from the urban farm which can help to sustain the children’s home
- 14. Program 3. Food Bank • Food bank will allows communities to donate unfinished food or ingredients and foods from the urban farm to be collected daily by any party in need. • Creates a platform for the communities to participate in the monthly distribution of food to poverty, illness, single parents and old folks family. • Minimize food waste as well as to increase the public involvement in social service program. Community recreation centre • A vibrant community recreation center can have a stabilizing effect on the lives of people (Sports Advisory, 2016) • Providing safe and adequately equipped spaces for physical activities like dance, martial arts, yoga, basketball, and other sports, community centers instill discipline, healthy exercise habits, and teamwork • There are no existing community center available around the site • Provide social spaces for the communities and promote healthy lifestyle at the same time increase their social attachment. Supportive Environment Theory (SET) diagram explains how humans need supportive environments for physical (senses, muscles, motor functions) and mental development (being able to feel and think), and to maintain a good health (ibid).

Kids' Bookhouse Taitung, Taiwan • Children from disadvantaged households,headed by a single parent or affected by problems such as poverty or domestic violence. • Offer the children homework guidance after school, shared meals and diversified course learning. • The services they offer have expanded to include assisting unemployed people and delivering meals to the elderly. • Constructing Black Kid Café, which functions as a vocational training site. • Currently there are 9 branch of Kids' Bookhouse located in Taitung Precedent Study

Precedent Study House of Love, Klang, Selangor • A charitable children home for the orphans, abused, abandoned and neglected children. • Provide shelter and tender care to support physical, spiritual, mental, social and educational well-being of the children. • Food bank program, this program in every 4 week of the Sunday to do food given only 4 hours/month, (a year 48 hours) concept, to encourage those who want to do charity to join. • They have a social agriculture program which has established the concept, purpose and goal of aquaponics system • Empower children the skills for further development of agricultural technologies and contribute to the society in future and deliver healthy and nutritious foods for the beneficiaries of food bank program.

Site Site Wellness centre Institut Koperasi Malaysia MBPJ hall Assunta Hospital SK Assunta Jalan Bukit Menteri Selatan 7/4, Petaling Jaya, Selangor • Beside an existing drug rehabilitation center • Area: approximately 4620m2. • It is a residential area which is only 2km away from Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) • 1.5km away from Assunta Hospital.

Site Site Drug Rehab Centre Meditation Centre Elderly home Children's home Jalan Bukit Menteri Selatan 7/4, Petaling Jaya, Selangor • The reason of choosing a site beside of a drug rehabilitation center is because it allow better collaboration with the center to help the children of addicted parents • There are around 7 elderly care centre, 3 rehabilitation centre, 2 wellness centre and 1 children home around the site • The proposed project would encourage them to have more involvement with social service program meanwhile allow more collaboration with these existing care centre.
