Sanctuary
First of all, then I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivingsbe made for
everyone . . . 1 Timothy 2:1
Timothy is called to prayer? not as a last resort, but as a first impulse.
Paul knows that Timothy has all sorts of plans for this young church in
Ephesus; but he is urged to put God and God?s plans first. What about
us? In a church challenged by both outside and inside pressures, do we
put God first? Do we pray before we get caught up in budgets or
building maintenance? Do we pray before we despair about fielding
enough volunteers for the next project or Christian Ed class?
In lives caught up in the whirlwinds of the world, do we? each of us
individually? put God first? Do we pray before we make momentous,
life-changing decisions? Do we pray before we make everyday
choices? Do we put God first as we get up in the morning and again as
we go to bed?
God has placed us first! We were created in God?s own image. We are
part and parcel of God?s divinity, of God?s creative touch, of God?s
grace, mercy, and love. What an awesome yet terrifying responsibility!
In order to be faithful to this assignment, we must . . . absolutely must
remain in contact with the One who gave it to us, the One who created
us in the divine image. God has placed us first! Throughout the ages,
we have forgotten that divine spark within us. We have wandered or
even run away. We have not remained in contact with our Creator Parent; and yet . . . God did not forget us. God
became human in order to better understand our choices and our battles. God in Jesus Christ reminded us of the
divine spark, reminded us how to live out our love of God and love of neighbor, reminded us how to put God first .
. . and reminded us that God puts us first. What can possibly be our response to this love except prayer and
praise? What can possibly be our response to this grace except to share it with others? We are called to
prayer? not as a last resort, but as a first impulse. We are urged to put God and God?s plans first. Can you? Will
you? Dare we? I wonder . . .
Grace&Peace,
Pastor Anne

CALLING ALL BOARD AND COMMITTEE CHAIRS
Please prepare your May, 2016 - April, 2017 one page report and send
to Corina (churst@broadmoorchurch.org).
Because it will primarily be disseminated electronically, feel free to do this
in bullet points and to add photos. The deadline is Sunday, June 18th.
Thank you for your ministry to and with Broadmoor Community Church, UCC!
Dear Families:
This program year has been great!
The past few weeks have been filled with the wonderful sound and
spirit of children and youth. It sure brings an energy to the space that
is infectious. Here is a quote that I recently came across that was
posted on our BCC facebook page: ?The sound of a child isaspowerful
as a choir anthem, it means the church is alive?. As we round the end
of the program year, I am so thankful for your commitment, presence
and your beautiful children. I have had the privilege of watching
them learn so much about community, love, faith and what is sacred
and holy in this world. In addition, they have taught me so much
about what it means to be a pastor. We certainly had a good program
year here at BCCin children, youth and family ministry!
ThisSummer!
This summer, beginning, June 4, we will not have regular programming separate from our Glen Worship service.
Whole families are not only invited but encouraged to attend this 8:30am worship service outside in our Glen.
Families are invited to bring blankets, lawn chairs and a picnic snack. Don?t forget your sun hat! During this time,
we will set up a sacred prayground for children. ?These spaces have come to be known as praygrounds. They
encourage families to worship with their young children in a simple space designed to meet the physical needs of
young children, while engaging them in the sightsand soundsof worship.?Establishing a prayground is a quite radical
thing in a lot of churches. One Bishop of the United Methodist Church said, ?we have to be radically hospitable if we
want to be welcoming and we want our churchesto grow and for familiesto feel like they belong.?
The Board of Christian Education is excited about creating a prayground this summer. This model is two-fold:
1) We believe that young people learn faith best when
surrounded by the whole worshiping community and their
family, this is the perfect way to do just that.
2) We will not have to ask any adult to take away their
worship time to volunteer to be with children in a separate
space. With that said, parents are encouraged to talk with
their kids about the prayground before Sunday morning.
This is not a PLAYground. It is a QUIET space for children to
gather and prayerfully work on activities that are
developmentally appropriate and fit the theme and scripture of
worship. It is NOT a place for parents to drop their children as a
?childcare? but a space that children can gather with a parent?s
eye- while also experiencing worship. The other option is that
children can go to the prayground, grab an activity and then go
back to sit with their parents. Parents, please sit near the
prayground. Nursery care is also available on Sunday mornings
for all babies-2nd grade, beginning at 8:15am-11:15am.
Fellowship Time.
Following worship there will be a Fellowship time as usual. The leadership of the church has a few requests. We
want children and youth to enjoy the treats around the table. I recently preached in a sermon: ?Engaged in the right
way, tables (and food) can become a sacred tool used to invite everyone to nourish their bodies and their souls.?
However, we also want our young people to know that they are sharing the table and food with the whole
congregation.
(Continued on next page.)
2
And Jesussaid, "let thelittlechildrencome"
1) Please let the children know that the food was prepared carefully and ask that they wait until the entire
congregation is out of worship before partaking.
2) Also, invite them to beware of how much they are taking to eat. Perhaps one cookie, a few nuts and a
strawberry...for example.
3) In addition, please let your child know that the volunteers who have prepared the food are in charge. If they ask
the child to please wait, the child is asked to respect that request. We will ask the volunteers to identify
themselves.
Let thechildrencome?
We know that sometimes children and youth are super excited to be at church together and that God put the wiggle
and giggle (spirit, creativity and tenacity) in children & teens- please don?t suppress those wiggles and giggles in
God?s house. It takes a village to teach faith and as Jesus said, ?Let the children come to me.?
Youth Programming
There will be summer programming for the youth group (all entering 6th graders and up). Corina met with the
group and they requested meeting on a regular basis throughout the summer. Corina will gather youth for a casual
program (most likely outside) at 8:30am, June 11 and 25. We will keep you posted about July!
See you soon, and as always, don?t hesitate if you have any questions or comments.
Peace&Grace,

How does God work and weave through your personal and communal life? Testimony acknowledges
the holy ground in our lives. It claims the sacred out loud amongst your community of believers! It tells
God's story, within your own story and in your own words.
It does have elements that are about three things:
1) the speaker (you)
2) the faith community you are in
3) and God.
Beginning, Sunday, June 4 at the Glen Worship Service (8:30am) individuals will speak their testimony.
We have put together "The Testimony Worksheet" to help guide your writing and some materials about
the vision of testimony. If you are interested in learning and engaging this spiritual practice please let
Rev. Marta Fioriti, Minister of Faith Formation (mfioriti@broadmoorchurch.org) or Rev. Anne Cubbage,
Senior Pastor (acubbage@broadmoorchurch.org) know. We would love to sign you up for a Sunday!

Summer of Test imony
This year at our Annual Meeting on Sunday, May 7, we awarded each of the
major Boards for their leadership, support and love of ministry here at BCC.
Here iswhat we gave and said....
The body of this church has many jobs in creating the beloved community, in creating unity. Not every person or
every group has the same job or the same tool to accomplish the job. Today we will break out our tool-box and
award each group with a tool that fits their role in this church. Each role is so vital to building the church that
we call the body of Christ.
You can do many things with your tool. It can grace the center of each of your meetings as a reminder of your
role, your importance to this place and your job or you can bring it out on special occasions throughout the year-
because sometimes projects get hard and we need extra tools.
On each tool we have written this scripture:
For asin one body we have many members, and not all the membershave the same function, so we,
who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually we are membersone of another. Romans12:4-5
OUR EXECUTIVE COUNCIL: will receive a hard hat today. The people of the EC are our
contractors. Contractors are people who oversee a project; guiding and leading those who are
called upon to complete a project and sometimes undertake a project to provide materials or
labor to perform a service or do a job. Without a doubt the EC has a job- they sometimes enter
into many dangerous construction sites, are the ones that take charge and need the protection
of a hard hat.
BOARD OFMEMBERSHIP: will receive a tool apron. Wearing tool aprons is so important to
the job of membership. The board of membership has come alive with spirit and good ideas
these last few months. Their role is to welcome all those that come through our doors and all
those that are already here and need direction or a tool to get connected. The Board of
membership must be prepared with resources and tools to provide for any need. They can
organize their tools in their tool apron!
BOARD OF MISSIONS: will receive a brick. The work of the board of missions is the very
foundation of our ministry and faith here at BCC. It must be strong, stable and create the
structure in which all of our ministry is done. The urban dictionary defines brick as British slang
for a reliable person. Thank you to all those ?bricks?on the Board of Missions.
BOARD OF CHRISTIAN EDUCATION: will receive a hammer and nail. Providing
environments and experiences for people to learn faith is a constant building project. This
board is always constructing and reconstructing their program and ideas to fit the needs of the
people, the community and the season. The work of CE is ever changing and we can see that!
Where will you place the hammer and nail next?!
BOARD OF RESOURCE MANAGEMENT: will receive a financial spreadsheet. This
spreadsheet is like the blueprint of a house. This year this board has and will continue to write
the story of our congregation using numbers. They will edit, spell check, re-write and imagine a
story that can be told to the multitudes. They will do this using the tool of a spread sheet. We
are grateful for their creativity and perseverance!

BOARD OF RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT: will receive a sickle. Sometimes our community must be
harvested, in the same way we need reaping of grain crops or cutting of succulent foliage. This is
not easy work- a sickle will help! Sometimes to build the beloved community we must rely on our
own individual foraging in order to do the work we are called to do for each other and the wider
community.
BOARD OFWORSHIP& ARTS: will receive a paint brush. Often painting comes at the end of a
project- once the foundation is set, the landscape has been reaped, the faith constructed and the
story written. Sometime the creation of art and music and liturgy come in the midst of all the
chaos of building. Whenever it may be, the use of a paint brush enables the creative spirit of
God?s work to happen. The paintbrush is one of the most essential tools of a church and must
always be in the tool box.
BOARD OFFELLOWSHIP: will receive a wooden spoon. Wooden spoons are generally preferred
for cooking because of their versatility. Wooden spoons are also safer than most other kitchen
tools. It is the perfect magic wand for our kitchen fairies. They swoop in with their spoon, prepare
a beautiful spread and provide a safe and welcoming space for the congregation to gather. The
Board of Fellowship is always creative in their presentation. We know that the wooden spoon will
remind them of their continued work to create magic every Sunday.

  • 2. First of all, then I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivingsbe made for everyone . . . 1 Timothy 2:1 Timothy is called to prayer? not as a last resort, but as a first impulse. Paul knows that Timothy has all sorts of plans for this young church in Ephesus; but he is urged to put God and God?s plans first. What about us? In a church challenged by both outside and inside pressures, do we put God first? Do we pray before we get caught up in budgets or building maintenance? Do we pray before we despair about fielding enough volunteers for the next project or Christian Ed class? In lives caught up in the whirlwinds of the world, do we? each of us individually? put God first? Do we pray before we make momentous, life-changing decisions? Do we pray before we make everyday choices? Do we put God first as we get up in the morning and again as we go to bed? God has placed us first! We were created in God?s own image. We are part and parcel of God?s divinity, of God?s creative touch, of God?s grace, mercy, and love. What an awesome yet terrifying responsibility! In order to be faithful to this assignment, we must . . . absolutely must remain in contact with the One who gave it to us, the One who created us in the divine image. God has placed us first! Throughout the ages, we have forgotten that divine spark within us. We have wandered or even run away. We have not remained in contact with our Creator Parent; and yet . . . God did not forget us. God became human in order to better understand our choices and our battles. God in Jesus Christ reminded us of the divine spark, reminded us how to live out our love of God and love of neighbor, reminded us how to put God first . . . and reminded us that God puts us first. What can possibly be our response to this love except prayer and praise? What can possibly be our response to this grace except to share it with others? We are called to prayer? not as a last resort, but as a first impulse. We are urged to put God and God?s plans first. Can you? Will you? Dare we? I wonder . . . Grace&Peace, Pastor Anne 1 Your Minister?sMusings CALLING ALL BOARD AND COMMITTEE CHAIRS Please prepare your May, 2016 - April, 2017 one page report and send to Corina (churst@broadmoorchurch.org). Because it will primarily be disseminated electronically, feel free to do this in bullet points and to add photos. The deadline is Sunday, June 18th. Thank you for your ministry to and with Broadmoor Community Church, UCC!
  • 3. Dear Families: This program year has been great! The past few weeks have been filled with the wonderful sound and spirit of children and youth. It sure brings an energy to the space that is infectious. Here is a quote that I recently came across that was posted on our BCC facebook page: ?The sound of a child isaspowerful as a choir anthem, it means the church is alive?. As we round the end of the program year, I am so thankful for your commitment, presence and your beautiful children. I have had the privilege of watching them learn so much about community, love, faith and what is sacred and holy in this world. In addition, they have taught me so much about what it means to be a pastor. We certainly had a good program year here at BCCin children, youth and family ministry! During this time, we will set up a sacred prayground for children. ?These spaces have come to be known as praygrounds. They encourage families to worship with their young children in a simple space designed to meet the physical needs of young children, while engaging them in the sightsand soundsof worship.?Establishing a prayground is a quite radical thing in a lot of churches. One Bishop of the United Methodist Church said, ?we have to be radically hospitable if we want to be welcoming and we want our churchesto grow and for familiesto feel like they belong.? The Board of Christian Education is excited about creating a prayground this summer. This model is two-fold: 1) We believe that young people learn faith best when surrounded by the whole worshiping community and their family, this is the perfect way to do just that. 2) We will not have to ask any adult to take away their worship time to volunteer to be with children in a separate space. With that said, parents are encouraged to talk with their kids about the prayground before Sunday morning. This is not a PLAYground. It is a QUIET space for children to gather and prayerfully work on activities that are developmentally appropriate and fit the theme and scripture of worship. It is NOT a place for parents to drop their children as a ?childcare? but a space that children can gather with a parent?s eye- while also experiencing worship. The other option is that children can go to the prayground, grab an activity and then go back to sit with their parents. Parents, please sit near the prayground. Nursery care is also available on Sunday mornings for all babies-2nd grade, beginning at 8:15am-11:15am. Fellowship Time. Following worship there will be a Fellowship time as usual. The leadership of the church has a few requests. We want children and youth to enjoy the treats around the table. I recently preached in a sermon: ?Engaged in the right way, tables (and food) can become a sacred tool used to invite everyone to nourish their bodies and their souls.? However, we also want our young people to know that they are sharing the table and food with the whole congregation. (Continued on next page.) 2 And Jesussaid, "let thelittlechildrencome"
  • 4. 1) Please let the children know that the food was prepared carefully and ask that they wait until the entire congregation is out of worship before partaking. 2) Also, invite them to beware of how much they are taking to eat. Perhaps one cookie, a few nuts and a strawberry...for example. 3) In addition, please let your child know that the volunteers who have prepared the food are in charge. If they ask the child to please wait, the child is asked to respect that request. We will ask the volunteers to identify themselves. Let thechildrencome? We know that sometimes children and youth are super excited to be at church together and that God put the wiggle and giggle (spirit, creativity and tenacity) in children & teens- please don?t suppress those wiggles and giggles in God?s house. It takes a village to teach faith and as Jesus said, ?Let the children come to me.? Youth Programming There will be summer programming for the youth group (all entering 6th graders and up). Corina met with the group and they requested meeting on a regular basis throughout the summer. Corina will gather youth for a casual program (most likely outside) at 8:30am, June 11 and 25. We will keep you posted about July! See you soon, and as always, don?t hesitate if you have any questions or comments. Peace&Grace, Rev. Testimony acknowledges the holy ground in our lives. It claims the sacred out loud amongst your community of believers! It tells God's story, within your own story and in your own words. It does have elements that are about three things: 1) the speaker (you) 2) the faith community you are in 3) and God. Beginning, Sunday, June 4 at the Glen Worship Service (8:30am) individuals will speak their testimony. We have put together "The Testimony Worksheet" to help guide your writing and some materials about the vision of testimony. If you are interested in learning and engaging this spiritual practice please let Rev. Marta Fioriti, Minister of Faith Formation (mfioriti@broadmoorchurch.org) or Rev. • 5. This year at our Annual Meeting on Sunday, May 7, we awarded each of the major Boards for their leadership, support and love of ministry here at BCC. Here iswhat we gave and said.... The body of this church has many jobs in creating the beloved community, in creating unity. Not every person or every group has the same job or the same tool to accomplish the job. Today we will break out our tool-box and award each group with a tool that fits their role in this church. Each role is so vital to building the church that we call the body of Christ. You can do many things with your tool. It can grace the center of each of your meetings as a reminder of your role, your importance to this place and your job or you can bring it out on special occasions throughout the year- because sometimes projects get hard and we need extra tools. On each tool we have written this scripture: For asin one body we have many members, and not all the membershave the same function, so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually we are membersone of another. Romans12:4-5 OUR EXECUTIVE COUNCIL: will receive a hard hat today. The people of the EC are our contractors. Contractors are people who oversee a project; guiding and leading those who are called upon to complete a project and sometimes undertake a project to provide materials or labor to perform a service or do a job. Without a doubt the EC has a job- they sometimes enter into many dangerous construction sites, are the ones that take charge and need the protection of a hard hat. BOARD OFMEMBERSHIP: will receive a tool apron. Wearing tool aprons is so important to the job of membership. The board of membership has come alive with spirit and good ideas these last few months. Their role is to welcome all those that come through our doors and all those that are already here and need direction or a tool to get connected. The Board of membership must be prepared with resources and tools to provide for any need. They can organize their tools in their tool apron! BOARD OF MISSIONS: will receive a brick. The work of the board of missions is the very foundation of our ministry and faith here at BCC. It must be strong, stable and create the structure in which all of our ministry is done. The urban dictionary defines brick as British slang for a reliable person. Thank you to all those ?bricks?on the Board of Missions. BOARD OF CHRISTIAN EDUCATION: will receive a hammer and nail. Providing environments and experiences for people to learn faith is a constant building project. This board is always constructing and reconstructing their program and ideas to fit the needs of the people, the community and the season. The work of CE is ever changing and we can see that! Where will you place the hammer and nail next?! BOARD OF RESOURCE MANAGEMENT: will receive a financial spreadsheet. This spreadsheet is like the blueprint of a house. This year this board has and will continue to write the story of our congregation using numbers. They will edit, spell check, re-write and imagine a story that can be told to the multitudes. They will do this using the tool of a spread sheet. We are grateful for their creativity and perseverance! (Continued on next page) 4

For more information and registration, contact Lynn Hurst at lhurst@broadmoorchurch.org Music and Arts ½ Day Workshop for all K-3rd graders July 14, 9-1pm and August 11, 9-1pm. BOARD OF RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT: will receive a sickle. Sometimes our community must be harvested, in the same way we need reaping of grain crops or cutting of succulent foliage. This is not easy work- a sickle will help! Sometimes to build the beloved community we must rely on our own individual foraging in order to do the work we are called to do for each other and the wider community. BOARD OFWORSHIP& ARTS: will receive a paint brush. Often painting comes at the end of a project- once the foundation is set, the landscape has been reaped, the faith constructed and the story written. Sometime the creation of art and music and liturgy come in the midst of all the chaos of building. Whenever it may be, the use of a paint brush enables the creative spirit of God?s work to happen. The paintbrush is one of the most essential tools of a church and must always be in the tool box. BOARD OFFELLOWSHIP: will receive a wooden spoon. Wooden spoons are generally preferred for cooking because of their versatility. Wooden spoons are also safer than most other kitchen tools. It is the perfect magic wand for our kitchen fairies. They swoop in with their spoon, prepare a beautiful spread and provide a safe and welcoming space for the congregation to gather. The Board of Fellowship is always creative in their presentation. We know that the wooden spoon will remind them of their continued work to create magic every Sunday. RADICAL WELCOME Next meeting, Wednesday, June 21 at 6pm.
