Sigmund Freud developed the theory of psychoanalysis which involves treating mental disorders by having patients discuss dreams, memories, and feelings, especially repressed or unconscious thoughts. He believed human behavior is influenced by three parts of the mind: the id, ego, and superego. The id seeks pleasure instinctually, the ego mediates between the id and reality, and the superego incorporates societal morals through parental influence. The goal of psychoanalysis therapy is to make the unconscious conscious by releasing repressed emotions, experiences, and desires.
