What do I need to know about the new RIs? • Over the last six months, AWS has revamped the types of RIs offered to customers. • Reservations can now be purchased at the Region level. • Example: Purchase an m4.large in us-east-1 - This RI “coupon” would cover a running m4.large in 1a, 1b or 1c without needing to specify the AZ. AWS has made it easier for customers to ensure their Linux Regional EC2 RI ”coupons” cover as many running EC2 instances as possible. Regional RIs – Size Flexibility • Regional Linux RIs now “float” any unused RI hours onto other instance types within the same region/family. • This maximizes possible RI savings at any given time automatically.

Why should I care? • If you use regional reservations, you can now purchase a single large regional reservation and let it apply to all instances of a family. • “Family Credits” vs Traditional Instance Based RIs - This lets you analyze based on total credits within Family/Region, instead of focusing on matching instance types. • You no longer need to modify regional reservations to get cost benefit. How will this change how I think about buying regional RIs?

The CUR will allow tracking of where regional RI credits are being applied. This allows for better benefit tracking, and the ability to better identify underutilized RIs.
