This document discusses using facilitated volunteered geographic information (VGI) to visualize transportation patterns. Facilitated VGI involves using online geospatial surveys to collect location-based information from the public in response to a defined question or geographic area. It can be targeted to specific groups and is more useful for research and outreach than regular VGI. An example of facilitated VGI is a community trail mapping project, which can rapidly gather broad input from a large sample size, though it loses the personal touch of in-person surveys. Informed design requires understanding transportation patterns through methods like facilitated VGI.
