Introduction to
Children’s Literature
Using
Gale Literary Sources
from the Tarleton Libraries
for your Author Fair
2
From the library’s home page
(http://www.tarleton.edu/library),
click one of the “Databases” links.
3
Databases are listed in alphabetical order.
Click on the letter G in the alphabet, then
click on Gale Literary Sources to open it.
4
If you are logging in from off-campus, you will
encounter this screen when you click on a
database name. Enter your NTNET ID and
password to access the databases.
5
Gale Literary Sources
Click on “Person Search”
One database with multiple sources of
information on authors
6
Gale Literary Sources
Click the “Search” button.
Enter author’s name in the box (last name first).
Spelling matters, capitalization does not.
7
Search Results – Click on correct author’s name
Gale Literary Sources
8
Click on Biographies to get the most information needed
for your assignment.
Gale Literary Sources
Results may include different Content Types, such as
Literature Criticism, Biographies, Topic & Work Overviews,
Reviews & News, Primary Sources & Literary Works, and
Multimedia (which may include a photograph of the author).
9
Contemporary Authors Online is a great source.
Sort results by Newest
10
Tools at the right let you e-mail, download,
print, etc., the information you find.
Check the date the article was last updated.
The author or publisher website may have more current data.
11
There are also citation tools, but keep in mind the citations
may not be in the correct format!
Be sure to select APA 6th
Edition.
12
Contemporary
Authors
Online articles
include
biographical
information
(Personal
Information
and Career),
information on
awards…
13
… and a list of your
author’s works in
chronological order
(NOT in APA format
though!).
“Sidelights” often includes quotes and theme information…
14
…and there is often a “Further Readings” section,
with suggestions for more sources to check.
15
Some of the
Biographies
sources, such
as Children’s
Literature
Review, are in
an e-book
format and may
include a
photograph.
You can click
the full-screen
icon, or use the
magnifying
glass to
16
Use the arrows to turn pages within the article.
Tools on the right let you e-mail, download, print, etc.
17
Go back to your original Search Results, and scroll down
to Document Type in the sidebar on the right. If you see
a + in the upper right corner, click on it to open the menu.
There may also
be a
photograph
and website list.
Interviews are
good sources
for quotes.

articles from
Contemporary Authors
Online and Children’s
Literature Review each
count as a source.

you need more
sources!
