by Febian cole
Step 1: Introduction
1 Start Strong
Your introduction should grab the
reader's attention and provide an
overview of your research.
2 Context is Key
Make sure to provide
background information on the
research problem and why it's
important.
3 Aim for Clarity
Keep your writing concise and
crystal-clear. Avoid jargon and
technical terminology unless
absolutely necessary.
Step 2: Identifying the Research Problem and
Questions
Know What You're Looking For
Identify the central research problem
and questions you'll address in your
proposal.
Do Your Research
Find relevant literature and make sure
you're up-to-date with what's currently
being discussed in your field.
Generate Ideas
Check out different approaches and
perspectives to the topic to generate
innovative ideas for your research.
Step 3: Review Relevant Literature
Stay Focused
Make a list of the key sources you'll need to review to
meet your research goals.
Organize Your Information
Ensure your bibliography is up-to-date and properly
categorized to help you keep track of your sources.
Reading Comprehension
Make sure you're able to understand the literature review
in its entirety, and be prepared to communicate it so that
others can too.
Critical Thinking
Be able to critically analyze and synthesize information
from a wide range of sources to meaningfully contribute to
the debate on your research problem.
Step 4: Choose the Research Methodology
1
Select Your Approach
Determine the methodological framework and research
design that you will use.
2
Design Your Study
Determine how to collect data and how to analyze it using
the chosen framework and approach.
3
Prepare for Data Collection
This may require identifying the target population and
sampling methods, as well as implementing data
collection techniques such as interviews, surveys or focus
groups.
Step 5: Plan the Research Process
Manage Your Time
Create a detailed plan with a timeline
including dates and milestones you can
use to help track your progress and set
achievable goals.
Recruit Collaborators
Building a team is a great strategy to
divide tasks and complete your
research faster, so you may need to
identify suitable partners and get them
on board.
Refine Your Skills
In addition, be ready to acquire any
skills or techniques necessary to
complete your research, such as
working with complex software or
programming languages.
Step 6: Consider Ethical
Implications
1 Meet Ethical Standards
You must ensure that your research design and execution
complies with ethical standards, guidelines or protocols specific to
your discipline.
2 Protect Human Subjects
Participants in your study must also be protected from any harm,
and their privacy and anonymity must be safeguarded.
Step 7: Expected Outcomes and Potential
Limitations
Define Your Results
Write down your expected results
and identify the steps you will take
to validate your outcome measures.
Evaluate Potential
Drawbacks
Identify and acknowledge any
potential limitations of your study or
methods, and develop a plan to
mitigate these risks.
Address Uncertainty
If you encounter an unexpected
result or limitation, take time to ask
important questions and seek
advice from other experts in your
field.
Step 8: Conclusion
1
Summarise Your Proposal ✅
Revisit your proposal to ensure that you have covered all
the necessary components to make a compelling case for
your research.
2
Edit & Revise
Polish your research plan by reviewing it for language,
structure, and clarity, and revise as necessary.
3
Be Sure About the Purpose
Restate the purpose of your research, and be confident in
the potential impact that your work could have in your field
and beyond.
