This document summarizes research on estimating payments for smallholder agroforestry contracts in Tanzania. The research uses stated preference and revealed preference methods to determine how much farmers should be paid through payments for ecosystem services (PES) contracts to plant and maintain trees on their land. Through choice experiments and an auction with 300 farmers, the research found farmers have a high willingness to plant trees for contracts offering annual payments of $15,000-45,000 Tanzanian Shillings over 3-10 years. The auction method revealed farmers' true willingness to accept as the average bid was $157,402 Tanzanian Shillings for a 3-year contract maintaining woodlots. The research aims to help set appropriate PES payment
