This document analyzes medical malpractice claims data to identify factors that affect payout amounts. It finds that severity and attorney retention are positively correlated with amount, while age is not. Severity has the strongest effect, with each increase in severity associated with a $30,586 higher payout on average. Payouts were significantly higher when an attorney was retained versus not. Marital status was also notable, with married/separated claimants receiving significantly larger payouts than other groups.
